  • How to do a proper headbutt?

I recall Ryu mentioning that a good headbutt can put your opponent out of commision IF done properly. So my question is, how do you do a "proper" one?

I love headbutts, and I do love the effects when done, but I never thought headbutts were a finishing move. Can anyone explain please?

The top of your head to your opponent's face. NEVER butt heads together...aim for soft tissues of your opponent's face, and throw a headbutt from your shoulders. Get your body behind it, and do not use your "neck" in throwing it, because you can hurt yourself. You need a strong neck to do it, so do strengthening excercises like neck extensions, arching drills, etc.
Grab a Paul Vunak tape about headbutts, knees, and elbows. He explains the mechanics pretty well. It's a bit more closed in on the ground, but the same principles generally apply.

If you're talking stand-up, grab the guy in a standard muay thai neck clinch then dip down by bending your knees. With your face pointed slightly downward to expose the top of your head, pull your opponents head toward you as hard as possible while JUMPING into him with the top of your head. A small jump by the way, don't exaggerate it.

Ever seen big horn sheep battle? They don't just whip their heads around, they tuck theirs chins down and RAM each other, using their legs to generate the power. So remember to dip down and use you legs to propel the TOP of your head into your opponents FACE while simultaneously pulling their head toward you.

We from Sardinia are headbutting artist:

First: you are arguing with a guy, then, in the middle of a sentence, headbutt him aiming with your hairline at the tip of the nose; end of fight. You MUST be good at throwing the bomb without telegraphing it and without chambering your head to gain momentum.

Second: if you are taller than your opponent, you may end headbutting yourself if the other guy lower his head by as little as one inch: enter the underdog variation; feint the normal headbutt and, as the guy lower his head, do a slashing downward elbow to the tip of the head.

Others: feint a double leg, but don't lower too much, when he start to sprawl he put himself into a perfect position to receive a raising diagonal heabutt (aimed to the left if you are left lead) very unorthodox and unexpexted.

Greco-clinching: execute a sudden snapdown with the hand that grab the opp. neck, then release suddenly. The guy head will spring upward, if you are lucky you'll get the entire face exposed: headbutt to the mouth or the nose (not the chin, it's effective but painful for you).

Thai clinch: do the waltzer step and when the opp start losing balance, headbutt to the side (as regularly done by Vanderlei Silva).

Defense from headbutt: forget about parrying them, slip instead, then ELBOWS. I've noted that the vast majority of brawler here do a lot of rearward movement and then BOOM with the arms wide open; pretty much dumb, the fact is that here the headbutt is done when you are talking real close to someone; if there's no chance that you can have a safety distance, slip and elbow.

I will post more when something else will come to mind. Here I haven't see a brawl without headbutts, we are renomed in all the state.

By the way Underdog, how are things going for you? You seemed kinda down a few weeks ago.

As far as training goes, I'm fine, as ever, I'm just returned from the monthly weekend at Ruas Vale Tudo academy in Rome, where more or less I've raised hell...

I've sparred real hard with a Kickboxing guy (strange guy, didn't know about low kicks..), I've KO'ed him with a nice combo. I've sparred for 12 mins with the guy that belted me this summer in Luta Livre (BJJ without gi), and NOW, it ended in a draw. I've gotten a guy in my town that spent six months a year in Brazil, and I've infected him with the NHB virus, now he's training in Recife with a Carlson Gracie Blackbelt; we roll regularly; also I trained following the Sperry Vale Tudo Tapes, they helped me immensely in my game. My behaviour in that gathering has awarded me a slot in the next april first National open submission wrestling competition. I'm training my ass off.

My private life is a completer wreck.

I'd dated a girl, but it didn't get too well, so I'm on my own (damn..Xmas coming...); I'm fighting with lots of aestethics problems, so, it's still a pain to wake up in the morning, but, when I FIGHT, everything just click right for me.

                Thanks for intersting, ryu.

                    Underdog,
I actually know how you feel. Back in high school I had no confidence with girls, never tried getting the right ones, always got pulled around like an idiot, and felt completely worthless. I felt ugly, fat, and that no woman ever would go for me. Somehow I changed all that by deciding that life was better if I treated each day like a chapter of a book (or an episode in some show). That way, even if I had a bad day, I could "start over" the next since new things happen in new chapters and new episodes. I worked out like crazy, got the body I wanted, and started dating girls that only had high morals, and good compassion (so as to avoid the ones who treat you like shit) To be honest, there are a LOT of pretty women out there who will be good to you.
But tough breaks happen, and I am also spending Christmas alone without someone. The last two Christmas's were spent with my ex-girlfriend, hanging out, having fun, and being intimate at night, etc. That's gone now. And I only have the memories. But all it means to me, was that I was with the wrong person, and fate has maybe stepped in so that the right one looking for me has a chance to find me now. And I her.
Things work out weird. I'm hanging out with the most wonderful woman I have met in a long time. I can talk for days on end with her, and we have the same views on many issues. Yesterday I spent the day with her, drove out of town, went to a museum, went shopping, drove back, had a late night dinner, and caught a late movie together, then drove her home. A "date" that lasted from 11 am to 11 pm at night. And it was never boring once. The horrible thing is she has a boyfriend in Arizona...some long distance thing. So I can only sit and wait to see what happens. There are hints that the distance bothers her, but the guy seems like a good guy.
So it's hard for me to hang out with someone I have so much in common with, is so pretty, and who laughs with me all night.
So in a way I know how you feel, guy. Don't sweat it too much. Different chapters are coming in your life. I guarantee it.

                    Take care,
                    Ryu

Oh yes, I wanted to point out that the tip about using your legs to drive the headbutt in can be used on the ground as well. In the same way a wrestler uses his legs to drive forward on his opponent, you can generate power by ramming your headbutt in. The whole body is behind it. I just wanted to re-emphasize not to use your neck alone.

The analogy of the ram was already used. They use their whole body. Headbutting though does have its dangers, so be careful training it. (we're not rams)

I'll be sure to incorporate Headbutts in my training from now on! I dont think too many people realize what potenial power is lost by neglecting the headbutt.

Tez...I mean, Sleevesleep may decide to use it against you that next time he is feeling beaten and powerless.
