  • How to prepare for MA classes?

    well i will be taking BJJ in 2 months and i was wondering how can i prepare to for it or prepare for MA in general. I am sure you guys have something to say.

    well with bjj you will get down n dirty
    so i would start making sure you have good stamina
    make sure your ok with some big sweaty guy crawling all over you lol
    and just be prepared for some joint aches for a while

      you can avoid a lot of the "pain" associated with training if you are just relaxed. work at your pace, most people make the mistake of being macho or trying ot outdue themselves and give 110% on the first day. imagine being a magician your first day, and you're going to give 110%, well you really don't know what that means so chances are you'd just pull the rabbit out to hard and it'd claw you to death.

      so just take it nice and easy and don't hedge your expecations. you'll have a ton of stamina if you're loose and relaxed... but it doesn't hurt to do some cardio and stretch regularly between now and then.

        Get your cardio up. Jog and run sprints.

          Jog 30 minutes per day: good cardio.
          5 sets of 20 push-up.once per day
          5 sets of 50 sit-up. once per day.

            So the more fit you are the better.


            I mean if i guy was really fit and he was fighting a guy who wasn't really fit but has technique? who would win and what are the advantages and disadvantages

              The advantage is you don't get tired. Doesn't matter what you know if you cannot breath and are too tired to move quickly. Grappling is hard work, if you have bad cardio you will not last very long at all on the ground before you gas out and get tapped.

                Have a cup of coffee or espresso right before the class to give yourself some juice. I never found this to dehydrate me like people say it does.
                Also pop a few aspirin for past and future pain.
                Drink water at least every half hour while training.

                If you're not flexible try running, or jogging, or jumping rope to get your heart rate up first, then stretch when you've worked up a sweat.

                You don't have to do those first two that I said but it's worth a try.

                    i'm pretty fit I do at least two hours cardio a day. I really REALLY need to work on my flexibility though. what are the best ways of stretching to impove flexibility.
                    I say I'm new and I am but I have taken Tae kwon do, shorin ryu in the past not long enough to really say so but I do have a little heads up on things.

                        that is a bit silly.
                        Trying to scare the newbie is a bit silly.
                        I think swimming is good exercise for BJJ.
                        Teach you to hold your breath while swimming is a good exercise especially against choke attack.

                          Hey ole Pete. Don't worry bout scaring me I lack fear most of the time (I guess that can be good and bad). He although amazes me to take time to write something so juvenile and well..........I guess its his sense of humor. Thanx for the swimming post I truly never thought about that way of training. I don't know that I'm going to go drown my self, lol, in preparation but since I swim anyhow its not a bad idea. I more concerned on trying to increase my felxibility than anything. I remebre first few months of Tae kwon do and shorin ryu I was so sore I'd literally have to role my ass outta bed in the morning. I'd like to avoid being that sore but its not the end of the world either. Pain after all makes gain right?
