What is your opinion of Shidokan Karate? I am thinking of checking it out.

    Thanks

shotokan katate is a very stong art that is set in fundementals. if you are looking for a new art with a lot of power you should go with it. the one thing i don't like about shotokan is that it is not a verry agile art. it is a good art though.

He was asking about Shidokan, not shotokan. Shidokan is a full-contact fighting version of karate; don't know the connection between the two.

It seems there is more than 1 Shidokan karate

one seems to be full contact, with 3 kinds of matches, knockdown, thai style and grapling

the other a traditional Okinawan style

I saw this competitive Shidokan in Grapplers Mag some time ago. It is, indeed, like three competitions in one.

Looked ok I suppose, but isn't really "Karate".

I've nerver heard of Okinawan Shidokan but what was said about full contact style of karate was correct. That style consists of karate, Thai boxing and grappling. Some MMA guys come from Shidokan. (ex. - Shonie Carter) It seems to be one of the better styles of karate out there. However, it still has some bs llike kata, belt ranks, etc. There are two Shidokan dojos in the Chicagoland. One is right by my house. I am not taking it though cause I obviouslly don't like the traditional stuff. If it is MMA why call it karate? After taking Krav Maga for a year and being somewhat dissapointed by it, I am switching to the Straight Blast Gym curriculum.

Because the shidokan Karate group wanted to be able to fight under other different fighting format: Muy Thai and submission fighting. and still retain some form of discipline and Karate Image/philosophy.
They fight in a boxing ring: first round is bare hand a la kyokushin, second round is Thai Box with gloves, Third and final round is submision fighting (not too sure if they allow stikes?).
I have seen fights and they are pretty good.
Fighters do get confused sometimes, e.g punching the guy on the face in round one, or like submissions moves in round two.
But I love the range of fighting format that they have.
I mean when I think about it, let try to knock out the guy with bare knuckes body punches and low/middle/ high kicks to the head, if it does not work, lets put some gloves on and lets include some extra punches to the head and includes some clinches. And if it does not work by round 3, just submit the guy by chokes/locks for Godsake !etc..
They could switch to MMA event like UFC quiet easily.
