BJJ is primarily a grappling art with basic striking techniques. It prefers pragmatic techniques tested in no-holds-barred challenges. The history of BJJ goes back to Maeda a Japanese expert in Judo. He fought challenge matches against boxers and wrestlers and found out there main weaknesses. Boxers did not know about grappling so he used a low kick or elbow strike to close the distance and then take them down and submit him. The wrestlers he fought did not know submissions or they employed a different set of ones in the case of catch and can wrestlers. They were also unfamilar with the guard position and he would often suprise them with submissions from the bottom. Wrestlers often turned onto there back to keep from getting pinned not knowing this set up various submissions. Later Maeda went to Brazil and taught it to a man called Luiz Franca and Carlos Gracie. Carlsos's brother Helio suffered from fainting spells that kept him going to school. He adapted the techniques to his frail frame. To this day people do not know how much Helio refined what Maeda taught him. Some say that he simply kept the old street judo techniques alive. Either way we should thank Helio for keeping the old techniques safe while judo degenerated because of the Olympic explosion. Helio continued to test the techniques in no rules challenge matches. He called his art BJJ. He had many sons which also went onto test there techniques in challenge matches and on a few occassions on the streets. They strived to prove that BJJ was the superior martial art by beating other martial art styles. A big explosion in bjj came when Royce Gracie won the Ultimate fighting championship, a competetion to find which martial art was the most effective in a no rules situation, despite being one of the smallest and weaker compared to the other competitors. He went on to win three UFCs. Afterwards similar results were produced in other NHB tournaments with the BJJ fighters winning on most occasions proving the superiority of there techniques. Since then other BJJ practicioners have surpassed the Gracies and now everyone in No-holds-barred tournaments learn the effective techniques of BJJ. It is impossible to imagine a fighter entering the ring nowadays without knowledge of BJJ.
There are many styles of Traditional Japanese Jujitsu so tell me the style and I can get you info. Besides that check out the schools and instructors and find which one you like.
