  • thick neck excercises

I am a person with a rather thick neck. I like the look, and am wondering if any here train their neck in general?
Any good excercises or new ways of building your neck?

We all know the old fashioned bridge excercises,
    harnesses, etc.

    Any new ideas?

    Ryu,
I put together a giant rubberband using rubber tubing like what Rickson uses on the Choke video.
It seems to work pretty well-I also use it for arms & legs.

I sometimes rest a 10 lb sandbag on my head-moving my neck slowly front, back, and side to side.

      Ryu:

I'm sure you already know bridges and upright rows, but those have got to be the best. Upright rows gave me a "weightlifter's neck" within a few months. Now I am a massage therapist's wet dream - a mass of knots in my upper back and neck.

The right kind of pull-ups, i.e. wide-grip, can also be helpful in developing a big neck, if that's what you're going for.

Personally, if I kept doing those, my head would disappear before long.

I have thick neck for MY size. So I guess I have an average size neck but on a short guy. Barbell shrugs and rows really made my neck thick. And for some strange reason when I start gaining weight it all goes to my lower face and neck. I also do wide grip chinups, but I didnt know it focused on the neck.

          Yella:

Pull your head up behind the bar instead of in front, so that the bar touches the back of your neck.

          Hits the traps.

You can do the same thing with pull-downs or military's, i.e. pull the bar to the back of your neck.

Would traps be considered a "pull" muscle or a push muscle? Because I also feel it when I do barbell presses.

Does a thick neck help you resist chokes?

It makes it harder to choke you out.

A chicken neck is easier to strangle than a bull neck right?

i dont think so but it should help you develop a good chin. A good chin isn't a product of having a hard chin but rather by having a good support system so your melon doesnt get rattled.

I'd think a thick neck would definitely help defend against neck-cranks.

But does the extra muscle actually make it harder to compress your carotid arteries? I've wondered about this.
