in my opinion, theres no point in even trying to discuss this. i mean, everyone brings up all these hypothetical scenarious. in theory anything can happen. u can come up with any scenario possible and talk about how one could deal with it. the fact is, things happen to u that u dont expect. it is up to u to adapt to that situation when it happens. u could keep arguing that this or that style is better for this and that situation, but it doesnt really matter cause its all in theory.
plus, using strikes dont always mean that u have agreed to fight someone. what if some stronger guy pushes u against a wall and isnt letting go? u can hit him hard a few times and he will release his grip and u can run away. that is self defense isnt it? in this case boxing skills were used as self defense. i didnt really agree with this guy grabbing me so i hit him. or what if someone was coming to attack u and u gave him a hard leg kick that left him unable to walk, giving u the chance to escape? thats self defense too aint it ? plus, alot of muay thai and boxing is done at very close range,as are other arts. u dont need to be able to run around to able to use skills from either art. u dont need room to use elbows, knees, uppercuts, headbuts, etc. im not really a person who is down to fight either. im not down with violence and i would rather not fight and just walk away. the fact is people are gonna try to do things to u wether u want to or not. every situation is different.
personally i think the grappling range should be ur last line of defense, because i wouldnt want someone hostile to get that close to me, however its not something u can always help.
the best self defense really is awareness. be aware of ur surroundings and be a chill person is the best way to defend urself.
