  • I'm new to martial arts

There is a school near me that teaches Judo, Goshin Jitsu and Jiu jitsu. There is also a nearby school that teachs krav maga. Do not know which one could be more effective in a street fight. Any help or suggestions?

Krav Magna has been slaughtered on this forum as of late. I had read a lot of good stuff about the art, but in some of the stuff that has been posted on here about how they defend against armed attacks has certainly concerned me. Fighting against an armed attacker is always ify, but the crap they were showing will get you killed.

While I don't know enough about Krav Magna to tell you one way or the other to train there, I've trained bjj and it is a good art. Bjj schools often lack stand up skills, but the school you described seems as though it is offering training in all ranges of combat and if you are looking for self defense skills, it sounds pretty solid based on the styles you listed that are taught there. My non-coveted advice would be the Judo/JJ school.

Ok Which one should I take Goshin Jitsu, Judo or Japanese Jiu Jitsu for self defence? This school was taught by a martial artist who was well respected in my community. His name was Gary Castanza. He did pass away some time ago and I never had the pleasure to meet with him.

I was kind of under the assumption that all three were taught together at this school. That's really a personal decision. Judo focuses on mosty throws and takedowns, with very moderate ground work. Goshin Jitsu offers some standing skills and some ground work, but the ground work isn't as advanced as the bjj ground game. As for JJJ, there are a lot of styles of JJJ so I don't know what you have there. There are a lot of the Japanese JJJ guys that have done well in MMA, you probably want to do some research on it once you find which specific JJJ they offer. If you do a search for JJJ on yahoo or google you'll get about a million hits. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, good luck!

judo is a sport, its not really for self defense. it can be used for self defense , but u will need tons of skill and years of practice before u will be able to use it for self defense.

jjj and goshin would prob be much better for self defense than judo

yeah, id say take danzan ryu. u will learn alot of things, including many judo throws. ur gonna learn techniques from all all parts of the spectrum. u will learn grappling, throwing, strikes, joint locks, and escapes. hopefully the dojo that provides this will train u well. jjj is really awesome and very effective if it is trained properly.
