  • MMA seminars

This is my first post so excuse my lack of knowledge. I took some martial arts classes in college and was pretty good and advanced quickly. However, that was quite a few years ago and I didn't keep training. Mainly for lack of schools where I live. I am really starting to regret that I didn't keep up with it and I would love to get into it again. But, my problem is I still live in an area with no schools nearby.

So, I was thinking of rounding up a training partner and attending a good MMA seminar to get started. Then I could train with my partner to keep in practice. Here is my question, are there any seminars for beginners? I'm sure I will pick up quickly but I would still prefer to start with people at a similar level. I don't mind traveling a little to get to the seminar.

Any good "beginner" MMA seminars out there?

    Thanks

you can't go wrong with a Matt Thornton seminar.

he's a BJJ Black Belt and trained with some big names in MMA.
he always covers a blend of stand up, clinch, and ground.

    check out www.straightblastgym.com

    you won't regret it.

Thanks for the info! There's a seminar in Oct not too far from me. The one in Canada could be close too, I need to find out what city it's in.

Have you been to one of his seminars? Is the fact that I am a beginner an issue?

        nvr8nf,

thats the great thing about his seminars. he basically covers the fundamentals of each range and specializes in NON-attribute based training. this is the stuff that any-body can do from day 1 if trained properly (and he'll explain in depth how to go about doing that as well)

i've been to over 6 seminars in the past couple of years. they are all great and get better and better every time. i have seen beginners (literally first day), intermediate, and more experienced athletes get a lot out of his seminars.

if you have a chance then you should definitely check one out.
if you're talking about the Canadian Conference with Karl Tanswell and Luis Gutierrez, then that should be awesome cuz those guys are excellent coaches as well!

I'm not sure because the website is a little confusing. Under seminars it states that they will be there Sept 24-26. Then when you so to their online store and click on seminars it shows a camp for Sept 15-19 listing their names as well. I'm assuming that the earlier seminar is at a different location.

I think I figured it out. It looks like the earlier seminar is in Oregon. And the Sept 24-26 is the seminar in Canada. Probably about 5-6 hours away.

I appreciate you pointing me in this direction. I've had a chance to read quite a bit on the site and this is definitely what I was looking for! "Real life" techniques.

              cool man!

just remember that its better to get in touch with the seminar host to get all the details about when, where, and how much? that contact info should always be on the posting.

the Oregon thing is their Fall Camp. its a huge camp where all the instructors, coaches, and athletes (from literally around the world) get together for a long weekend of training. the SBG itself hosts that, which is why you register directly with them at their on-line store.

everything else again - check with the person hosting Matt.

and if you're ever in NYC, look me up - my name is Christian. i run the gym which is the NY affiliate

Thanks Christian. I already e-mailed the host! Unfortunately I won't have a partner to go with at that time but I'm thinking of going anyway. I'm going to wait for the details.

Thanks for the offer and it looks like a great gym!
