  • BJJ. Why the fighters in Brazil come up with new moves?

I often ask myself why the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters in Brazil make up new moves every year. Then I answer it by saying,"Because they want to keep improving."But that can only go so far.Do any of you guys think the reason is because they want to stay ahead of us Americans in the game.I men, come on.Look at it.We are bigger and stronger than them. They have to keep their stuff updated so we wont be on a even level.

    Any thoughts???

The answer to this quesion is quite simple: There are simply mpore people doing jui-jitsu in martial arts crazed Brazil than enywhere else. Jui-jitsu and soccer are the big sports in Brazil, which has a very large population. There are many, many people with a passion for the sport there, ergo more technical development.

The same holds true for basketball and football (the manly kind) in America.

It's the same in any sport: people, teams, etc, are looking for an edge in competition. What happens is certain moves are created (very rare in MMA, since you can't really create something that's most likely already been done, you borrow it) or are borrowed and/or thrown back into rotation.

This is exactly why people saw the relogio move back into the mainstream. It wasn't a new technique by any means, just one that had been forgotten by most, then capitalized one in competition.

Example two I'd give is the use of the Wing T in football and how it initially revolutionized the game. Same with many other formations that have come up. Although I think this is more of an exception that doesn't apply to BJJ, since football is relatively new, comparatively.

By creating counter techniques and new moves they further evolve the sport. Their evolution pushes all of us train harder and to train smarter. Just like anything you have to evolve or become extinct.
