  • Ryron Gracie V Cameron Earle - IGJJF Open

Did anyone see the fight between Ryron Gracie and Cameron Earle on the weekend? Cameron ended up knocked out after Ryron slammed him - the move was legal for purple belts and above, but people in the audience were saying that Cameron didn't know the rules. Does anyone know if that's true? It would seem odd to me that someone would go in a competition and not know the rules...

Not skilled enough to win or too stupid to know the rules beforehand, either way hes the loser of this match!

I don't understand how that happens..the getting knocked out from being slammed in the guard??

Maybe I am ignorant..but I've been with guys who have tried that..and it seems like if you just hold their head really good they can't get any power..and on top of that..maybe you could get the wind knocked out of ya..but if you are holding your own head up off the mat how could you even be jarred at all?

I really am interested to know if this is something legit to worry about.

I'd like to see it before I make a judgement, but here is my gut reaction:

The few BJJ tournaments that I have been to, the emphasis is getting submissions and scoring points. Yes there are occasional throws and hard takedowns and sometimes people try to break the guard with little slams, but I've never seen anyone intentionally slam someone with the intent of knocking that person out. (Once again I did not see this match so I have no idea if Ryron was going for a knock-out).

Since I am not a purple belt or higher I also don't know if allowing slams is common in tournies. But, we know the Gracies like "special rules" in their competitions, so you better read that fine print before you step on the mat!
