There are certainly shades of BJJ in his groundwork, and submision wrestling.
His standup is old school kickboxing. He has some training material out called "Ultimate Pancrase," which I think is awefully good training material, and he should have a new set of 10 instructionals out in the next couple of weeks, so you might want to wait for those.
I think Bas is the man. He actually has some charisma, and he has fought and whipped the top of the food chain (back in his day): Kevin Randleman, Frank Shamrock, Maurice Smith, Tsuyoshi Kosaka, and all the other Japanese fighters they threw at him in Pancrase.
I think there are scenes in the documentary "The smashing machine" where he just dominates Mark Coleman.
I'm surprised by the cool reception his skills are receiving here...
I remain a fan and occasional correspontent of the man.

Bas is a Kickboxer that came from Kyokushin
As for his groundfighting, as far as I know hands on experience, Bas is an easy learner, he once saw a technique on video hours before a match and in the evening won his match with that same technique ( heelhook if I'm not mistakin)
Funny thing is that even though he is a striker, he told his oponents taht as long as they wouldn't strike on the ground, he wouldn't either, thus giving away a huge advantage
The only person that got hit on the ground was Frank Shamrock but that was because he started it
The only thing he lacked at the time was takedown defences ( we have very few wrestlers in the Netherlands)

I know you're only 15, and that the world can seem a confusing thing. You have all these hormones running around and, well, to be honest, your emotions get the better of you. I am flattered, but I'm a happily married man.
Good luck in your quest for luuuurrrrrrv.

I saw some of his Mixed Martial Arts Workout video, it was pretty good.
I really like Bas Rutten. If he had a seminar somewhere, I'd go to it.
And no, I'm not in love with Bas Rutten. However, anything is possible given enough time (and money).
Cheers.

He started off with Tae Kwon Do, then went on to Muay Thai and has black belts in Shotokan and Shorin-Ryu as well. Virtually all his grappling is self-taught.
