  • To Judo Guy...Ura nage, and ushiro goshi

Judo Guy do you think that these nagewaza transfer more realistically in a street altercation then say ippon seoi nage, or even uchimata, etc.

I feel more comfortable with waza that require me to get a hold of uke's body (as similar to greco roman as I can get).
I have been working the technical aspects of my throws, but seem more confident with ura nage and ushiro goshi as both a counter, and even a offensive move.

    Any thoughts?
(from others as well, not just Judo Guy. But JG, I'd like your imput.)

Uchi mata wouldn't be a bad throw on the street.....especially due to the fact that I habitually landed on my opponent after this throw in Judo competition.

I find it tough to pull off if the other guy is in a t-shirt.......that requires some variations.

IMHO O-sotogari is best for the streets

I think that O-goshi works well in most scenarios. I would also agree with Lacrymosa about the Uchimata. There was a loudmouth in one of my BJJ classes and our instructor got tired of it. He threw the kid with an uchimata that fractured a couple ribs.

Sort of on this topic is a trend I noticed in BJJ tourneys that score the takedown with fewer points than they are worth, in my opinion. Even the UFC proved that you can knock someone out with a well executed takedown. It seems to me that BJJ in general does not put enough focus on takedowns.

        Comments?

          They are worth 2 points.

I've seen several matches won on just the points gained from takedown.

          I think it's about right.

You don't think 2 points is too little? Even the mount position is worth 4! I would think that a clean take down that could potentially end a real fight would at least be equal in points to the mount position or even 3 points at least. It just seems to me that 2 points is too few. What else gets 2 points? Reversal?

3 might be a good compromise.

Or, 2 for a takedown and 3 for an ippon type throw.

But then you get into a lot of subjectivity on the part of the judges.

                Great responses, guys. Thanks much

I hope Judo Guy sees this thread soon. When does he usually come on?

But thank you all, you gave some great posts.

                  Hi Ryu,

Deeter makes some good points and the book he cites is excellent. My personal take is that it really depends on the situation.

Uranage won't do you much good if someone grabs you from behind as you are walking down the street. Dropping your center of gravity and executing seoi nage would make more sense in that case.

I think the odds of you facing someone who is good at defending throws or executing throws on the street is pretty small. So I would stick with the low risk throws like O Soto Gari, O goshi, Koshi Guruma or the different leg picks. Uranage is an excellent throw and highly effective. The problem I see with that throw is from a legal sense. Serious injury with that throw is more problematic when executed on inexperienced people.

                    JG,
                    Thanks for the post.
I didn't even think of the legal ramifications that might be involved with the throw. I like it because of the possible damage you can inflict with it. Perhaps ending the fight right there. But that gives me another thing to think about. And you are right about being attacked from behind as well.

                    Thanks again for the details!
I think I will check out the book you and Deeter mentioned.

                      throws & books

if you're checking into ippon books, and pick-ups, you mt. want "russian judo," as well . . .

re: throws; the pick-ups get harder as you get older; my back is shot now, so a lot of the p/u nage are out for me . . .

osoto w/ a palm-heel to the chin seems pretty reliable, and i can still loft guys w/ uchimata, even though my spine won't let me do most of the hip throws any more . . .

                      (but then, i'm closing in on 40);

                      my 2 cents,
