    Cheers Guys, some interesting thoughts.

Its fairly obvious that the attacker is no hardened MMA master - i think this clip was just used to demonstrate a possible untrained street style shoot rather than a experienced competition style fighter.

One thing to note though with the 'sloppy shoot' debate. Do you think his shoot would have been successful had Su not moved back and down as he came in. If Su had just stood there and spralled?? I think he probley would have been.

jubaji - Thanks for the profound contribution!

Good clip Chris mate. He avoided the shoot, so no argument on that score.

You wanna see Dimitri deal with these things. He aks for grapplers to volunteer and gets them up. He says "take me down, any way you want".

What you see appears much more rough and ready than the clip you postred, and sometimes he does indeed get taken down. But, within the blink of an eye he is on top and the clear victor.

Each and every time, with good grapplers, bad grapplers and ugly grapplers.

No, he's not. Rich is a sensible guy who creates practical nononsense drills and is not willing to get banged up to demonstrate his system.

By the way, Sonnon does this at his seminars too against UFC guys like Elvis Sinosic. Hard core man!

The shoot is not the best. The defense worked because of that. Going to one knee like the defender did would not work if someone put forward pressure in thier shoot. Anyone with one or two lessons in shooting would have the defender on his back. If you can't get out of the way of a shoot the only good defences are to fall to your guard or sprawl. Going down on one knee will never work against forward pressure. I know because we work this all the time in the gym. If it did work then wrestlers would use it all the time as it would put them in a better attacking position than would a sprawl. His moving back and down would not have worked against someone with shoot experience because they keep the forward pressure until they take you down. They keep driving. You cannot slap someone's spine with sufficient force if you are being driven backwards. The spine slap is predicated on stopping the attackers momentum which his body position would not let him accomplish. Against a street thug maybie so. Against someone who knows how to shoot he would be taken down 10 times out of 10.

James Lee I reject your argument that So's technique is good because it worked against a lame attack. By that logic I could stop a lame punch with my face, counter with a good barage of techniques and say that my face block was a good technique because it worked. Then I could teach everyone to block punches with their face. It's rediculous. If someone does a half assed shoot then any technique will do. If you train techniques that only work on lousy attacks then you will only be able to defend against lousy attackers. That is the problem with Su's technique. It breeds bad habits.
