  • Royce's Skill or Bjj

Hey, longtime lurker here, just watched UFC 1 again a few nights ago and I am now wondering...is it Royce's skill that makes him so great or the Bjj techniques? Personally I believe that Royce could win if he had studied just about any art as in depth and for as long as he has studied Bjj. I think its about %70 the person's dedication, determination etc and 30% the techniques they use..maybe not though, just a thought I had!

    Feel free to debate!

    Maybe a little of both?

It cant be denied that alot of folks that fought in the first few UFCs had no idea what BJJ was. But then again Royce is very skilled.

I just met him this weekend. I watched him allow huge blue and purple belts put him in armlocks and chokes and he would just laugh and escape without even breaking a sweat.

I think that the fact that he beat those guys was simply cause of the Techniques.I dont doubt that Royce has all the skill in the world.(Watching him toy with everybody att the seminar)But I think that the techniqus that he knew and the fact nobody else knew them, you could have put a Purple Belt in thier and he would have won.......

Yeah, I guess you are right about the techniques being new then..well new to the other UFC guys. There were some severe mis-matches there! Too abd for "Tuili?" who fell over and got a kick to the face..that was just sad.

Do any of the later UFCs come close to the "fun" of the first two? I rented a "best of" a few months ago and I was surprised that there were time limits and all this crap now I mean come on, gloves and everything...its no fun if its so controlled.

People forget that not all the early UFC fighters were clueless. A 180-lb purple belt wouldn't have beaten Severn, and perhaps not Hackney or Kimo.

I watched the first 20 UFCs back to back the other week, paying particular attention to fighters' defense in the guard. Nobody matched Royce's ability to avoid being hit by someone in his guard.

            That is so true!

He also beat the submission expert Ken Shamrock. Would a purple belt be able to take out a roided musclebound King of Pancrase?

You watched 20 UFCs back to back? You have way too much time on your hands.

Yeah, watching 20 in a row was sick in a way. I was injured and couldn't train, and had some time off from work.

In other words, I was bored.
