  • Help Me Counter

    When grappling with a friend he does a ground move that I need help to counter. He says its a judo technique if that makes any difference but what he does when im on the bottom... he basically lies on me... with his sternum on my sternum.... he kinda lies angled off to the side... soo basically his sternum is on top of my sternum... and one of his legs is between my legs and the other one is off to the side of my legs (sounds gay)... the thing is he cant really do anything with it... he never puts me into a submission and all he does is like lie there and try to tire me out... prolly gets him his breath back too... he usually holds my arms or hands with his hands.. basically whatever he can grab. So im looking for a technique to help get him off me, I have in the past just basically benchpressed him off... but that is alot of energy to lose and doesnt always work cause sometimes he can just get back in it... he prolly weighs... anywhere from 200-230.. and im at about 165 right now... anyway any help on getting out of this... any technique is helpful.. besides punching him in the head or kicking him in the nuts.... where grappling not fighting... ummm... and sorry for the post being so long .

    Stuck on bottom!

    If you're on the bottom and cross your ankles around his leg, in bjj terms you would have him in your half-guard. I'm suprised that he would give this to you, but if his experience is in Judo and not BJJ, he may not realize what he's doing. He should try to establish side control, and you should work on pulling guard. If he is on your right side and his right leg is caught between yours, reach down with your right hand and push his left knee to make space to slide your right leg under his stomach and establish the guard position. The fact that this guy doesn't know submissions is good for you. When stuck in a half-guard, the americana, kimura, figure 4 armbar, and quite a few chokes are available from the top position.

      You're at a huge dissadvantage because of him outweighing you by almost 60 lbs. Grappling has a logremithic{sp} effect. The longer he is there; the harder it is to get him off. The next time as soon as he puts you in that position airplane and roll him into an armbar. Do it fast because the longer he is there; the less chance you have of escaping. {Airplane means to spin around in a circle or half circle to reverse your bottom position} ( Roll him means, once you airplane, trap one arm and push him off with your free hand while the other hand traps his arm.) Push with your arm and legs.

      And you should reverse his position and be on top of him.

        Thanks guys sounds good in theory... yeah he doesnt really have ajudo background... its just something he picked up from judo... i dont know where he got it from.. think his grandpa told him it or something... the fact is ive never lost to him.... i usually make him tap out.. and once or twice weve just had a draw.. because he does this.. and after like a half hour of him lying on me not doing anything it gets kinda gay and boring... the only thing i wonder is if he is just lying on me crossways... like his sternum is still on my sternum but hes on a 90 degree angle from me.. how could i get out of that? he doesnt really have like a move... or technique.. he just kinda lies on me .. sternum on sternum... and just so you know I dont do BJJ or Judo or any type of grappling art... but then again ive only ever lost to my older brother (I win now) and ive beat up to 21 year olds at grappling (im 17 now) soo my point of this is that ... i dont really know what a guard is or whatnot... i know what a mount is... my gf does it quite often to me... but im not sure you want to hear about that and i dont know if i want to tell you. So anyway more theories / help would be good.

          If I read your post correctly it sounds as if he if placing his weight more to one side than right on top of you, so you should try to slide to the opposite side a little so that you are on your hip rather than flat on your back. This is a little hard to explain in text so I would advise looking around for some examples of taking top position from the half guard, but here goes a feble attempt at an explination of a counter.

          You are basically wanting to roll him to his back with your momentum once you get to your hip. Grab his outside arm and pull it towards you as you take your free leg straight up in the air and kick down as you turn in to him. Kicking the free leg and twisting your torso into him while pulling his arm into you should give you enough momentum to take top position on him. You'll probably be in his half guard, but at least you can work a little from there. I'm sure this is hard as hell to understand without seeing it, but search around because there are a gang loud of counters for something like this.

          Last, find an instructor. A lot of the techniques in bjj are very subtle moves that require clear instruction to do successfully. I started in grappling at a stand up karate school with a few guys that had taken a little bjj, but I had no idea how little I really new until I actually took classes with a bjj instructor. I still dont know much, but more than I did

              The guard is the dominate position to have when someone is on top of you. Your legs are wrapped around his waist and your ankles are crossed. This is called a closed guard. There are other variations of the guard, such as open and butterfly guard, but the closed guard is taught first and is the mainstay of bjj, at least at the beginner level. Airplaning is a good idea, as Hardball pointed out, but if your leg is trapped between his, this won't be possible. Clearing the leg is the first thing you should do. Once you establish the guard, you can work for the armbar. Remember, the basic idea of bjj or any other grappling is "Position before submission". Work to establish a dominant position, like the guard, before attempting a submission and you will have great success. The guard was designed to deal with a larger and heavier opponent mainly because you're supporting his greater weight with your legs and hips, as opposed to your chest, ie. sternum to sternum.

                samarai, i think i know what pin u are talking about. theres a specific escaping technique used for that pin called ebi in judo. u kinda had the right idea by trying to bench press him off, however, instead of pressing str8 up, u need to press to the right or left of u, depending what side he is on. try to turn onto ur shoulder as much as possible while using ur hands to push into his shoulder, thus pushing u away from him and creating enough space between both ur bodies to get free.

                  Thanks for all the info guys... soo if I have someone in the gaurd.. which is them lying on me and my legs wrapped around one of their legs ( I think thats right) how would i go about putting them into an armbar from there... seems like its something far off.. and if I dont have the right idea about the guard sorry.. i never took BJJ or any grappling

                    Half-guard

                    What you just described is half-guard. See post #2 in this thread to get from half-guard to guard. The arm bar is a totally different matter, but is useless if you can't get the guard.
