  • Preventing someone from taking your back

I am having trouble with some people taking my back early on while rolling, then using a body triangle and rear choke combination that usually taps me out. Does anyone know of a good way to avoid letting someone take the back, and if so, to defeat the body triangle? I know about rolling to the side that his feet are locked on and applying pressure, but sometimes it doesn't work, especially if the pressure is too great. Also, does anyone know a good method for preventing the body triangle altogether (after he has taken your back)?

    Thanks

BJJ has a submission you can apply to those you lock you up with a body triangle. The best thing you can do is not give him the opportunity in the first place, but even if he does you want to get out of that position as quickly as possible.

        Well,
There really isn't enough info to tell what's happening that you keep getting your back taken. You don't say which position you are fighting from when he takes your back. More info on exactly how it usually goes down would be helpful. Usually though it has to do with poor base and posture.

Thanks guys, especially doubleouch... I'm reasonable good at avoiding letting someone take my back, but sometimes it happens anyway, especially when we first begin rolling (usually on our knees). When that happens, sometimes a person will use the body triangle right away, and it's so painful that I don't have a chance to try to roll the person and myself to the side that his feet are on. My instructor says that there isn't really any other defense to it, that my best hope is to just not get in it, but I'm always open to other suggestions as well.

          Thanks again guys

Still not enough info. Is he snapping you down and then spinning to your back?
What position are you in just before he takes your back.

Hi doubleouch...Sometimes my back gets taken, usually when we first start rolling. Often it seems to happen when I'm too aggressive early on, and I get knocked to my side. Having someone take my back isn't as big of a problem as the body triangle, so I guess that's my main question-how do you defeat or at least prevent a body triangle? I know the obvious things, but am I missing something?

              Thanks

                Well,

Someone can't put the body triangle on until they get the hooks in. They can't get the hooks in until they take your back. They can't take your back until you let them get out from in front of you. If you do get knocked to your side you need to keep them below your hips. If they do get above your hips you need to ball up tight. If you stay balled up they can't get their hooks in. If they do get their hooks in roll to one side and put your weight on their leg. This will prevent the body triangle. If they do get the body triangle you need to roll to the side they are locking on and trap the ankle of the upper leg with your upper leg. Push with the hips and the pressure will make him let go. If you can't visualize it try getting in that position and find how to trap the leg and put pressure on the lock.
