Renzo Gracie BJJ or Muay Thai?

Of course I wish I could train in both Muay Thai and BJJ but I can't because the cost would bankrupt me. Renzo charges $250 for unlimited BJJ and the best Muay Thai school here is $150 a month (www.muaythai-nyc.com).

Some replies mentioned Renzo's school having a MT instructor but that guy charges another $180

So I have to make a choice between either BJJ or Muay Thai and it's a really tough decision for me. I have prior striking experience with TKD and I've done some BJJ 2 years back, so I'm totally comfortable with both. I just want to get back in to serious training and wanted some opinions.

Which would you say is more practical? If you personally had to choose, what would you do?

Dude your in the wrong country,lol.You can train at clubs in Perth Western Australia for say $45-$50 US. And they have many Different Styles.Bjj,MT,karate,many other styles at one club and they are all at the top of their game.
My boxing coach is one of the best in the country.My bjj coach is also one of the best we have and the highes ranked in my state.My boxing coach also teaches MT,and is undefeated in the ring.Now retired just coaches.One of is students fought his firs fight in the ring and made the current Australian champion look like a beginner.
Dude they sure do charge alot over there.But then again look who it is doing the training.You pay for the service i suppose.

If I personally chose though, it may not be right for you. How do you usually fight? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? Which one do you like more?

Good god. Most BJJ schools around here are $70-90 for unlimited classes, same with most kickboxing schools. I'm sure Renzo is a great teacher, but you might want to look around for some other more reasonably priced BJJ schools in NY.

Don't forget this is NYC we are talking about. Almost EVERYTHING in NYC is more expensive than anywhere else in the country. For one thing, real estate/rent is expensive as hell in NYC, and any institution is going to charge accordingly so that they can stay in business. Also, Renzo is very well known in the martial arts world. Any teacher that is famous and sought after is going to cost you. That's life unfortunately.

If you've already BJJ and feel comfortable with it, then I would go with MT. Simply because you're already acquainted with a ground fighting system that is effective, whereas, as far as stand up, you've only done TKD, which focuses primarily on kicks. Although it's good for kicks, it often neglects the punching range, and completely ignores the clinch. Go with MT, at least for now.

Merry Christmas to all and thanks to all the helpful replies. I agree with Nick that Muay Thai is a good choice for a well rounded standup game. Something you don't get with TKD which conditions you to kick all the time, barely using hands, no elbow, knees or clinch-work.

Also, for a guy my size, (not very tall, 145 lbs) Muay Thai is less frustrating because in BJJ a lot of times you'll find yourself sparring a 200+ lbs guy who can pretty much finish you off just by putting his weight on you (full mount, side mount), not even using any submission techniques.

Someone else pointed out that realistically BJJ would not be very practical in NY because if you get mugged here, chances are it will be by a group of guys, in which case it's stupid to take 1 guy to the ground while the others soccer kick your head.
