The way people fight in the west is very different to how those fight in the east. For example in England a street thug will head butt someone break his nose then when he falls to the ground kick him in the head.
In America, Red necks tend to use round house punches, hooks jabs.
In China neither of these styles of fighting are used. They focus on centerline punching.

As for older MA not being effective I can only say this. People have been fighting for thousands of years there is probably no single technique or style that has not been used in the past. The problem is there's no real documentation and over the years information decays and people forget. So all these "new" styles and techniques are really just borrowed from antiquity making those so called "out dated" styles as relevant today as they were 3000yrs ago. ( Im talking about pure hand to hand, no need for flamers to get all rowdy about me not mentioning that the older arts don't include much if anything on firearms).
