  • Where is the proof in Walt Bayless Combat Ju-jitsu?

It seems that here in SLC, there is a small but devoted following to this guy Walt Bayless. But who is he really? I have heard so many stories about his background. Hell I was shocked to find that he is no longer involved in MMA and is trying to separate himself completely from MMA. Yet his followers are still devoted to his so called "superior" form of Ju-Jitsu. But where is the proof I say? Did Walt actually fight ever? Did he ever win? His followers go around talking so much smack against Pedro Sauer, and BJJ, and that thier system is better, but where is the proof???

I have no clue about Mr. Bayless, but I do know that he's had some top talent over there, including Alex Steibling (used to fight PRIDE, trained over at MTIK for awhile) and that Silva the Maniac UFC guy. Some of his guys fight the UCE thing... I dunno, Utah, suprising enough, has some pretty top notch places to train, Pedro Sauer's, Mushin (Mushin and Kalista were THE bomb diggity, I have so much love for those guys, they're the coolest, the classiest, and the overall best for technique and fighting prowess), I don't think Kalista is around anymore
I refuse to say ANYTHING nice about MTIK due to personal problems over there, Janjira's out of buisness, UCTC in Kearns trains fighters, but with very limited technique and style (it's all about style, baby), Flash has some okay guys, I dunno if Kwame is still over there or Ali, but they're top notch...There's a kyokushin place, but that's the only okay place for TMA in SLC.
Evolution guys (Jared and crew) are cool, especially for the FMA.

what I'm saying is, go to Mushin, or Pedro's if Khru Bernales is still in town.

Hey Garland, I didnt know you hung out in here too. Im not sure if you remember me or not, but we have met a few times at Will's. I use to train consistently with Brandon Kiser and M'Lisa over at MTIK. I started when Craig first opened in Sugarhouse ages ago, and trained there for about 3 years. Anywho, I thought maybe someone in here would have the scoop with Bayless Ju-jitsu. Its amazing to me how many different stories I hear about this Walt guy. There also seems to be some controversy as to whether he actually trained under Pedro or not. Fun stuff eh?

Towards the end of me training over at MTI, I also had some issues with management over there. Dare I ask what happened to you? I have always wished I stuck around a little longer to meet and train with Sakasem, but things were so different back in the day before Sem came in...

      Take care man

Okay..long story short, you remember Dee, right. Along with working over at the gym, he also worked at my parent's restraunt. Shortly after my fight, we found out he'd been stealing a momentous amount of money from us by forging and messing with food orders, all of this was brought to my family's attention by the owner of a local asian market, whose life Dee had allegedly threatened. Along with Dee, his girlfriend, Heather, who was working as a hostess for us, and another employee, Mikey had been helping him cheat the system and were stealing out the front of the restraunt. Dee and company left, nowhere to be found. A great blow to my family, who had placed a great deal of trust in him, letting him and Heather take me out of state on several occasions to view fights (a few times up to Idaho, including once with Will and Brian for Brian's first fight against Matt May, and a later fight to Vegas to see one of Ali Casey's bouts) , and Dee used to live at my grandparent's house when his wife went back to Thailand with his kids. We figure he keifed well over 50,000 from us, but we have no idea how much more, because we have no clue how long the theft was going on.

Because of the above circumstances, and the fact that Dee had been sort of my personal trainer and coach, I no longer felt cool about working out at MTIK, and because of a year-long contract I'd become part of due to my training, I got latched in. I just never went back, there was no desire for me to train with Craig, whom I have very low opinion of, for reasons I'm sure you'd understand, and John as well.

Saksem's wife and daughter were working for us also...but they decided to go to work for the competition and there was a little tiff between Sem's daughter and a few of our employees when Dear came with her mom to try and buy raw materials and foods for cooking in bulk from another one of our Thai cooks.

Basicly, I no longer want to see any of that whole group, those guys fucked me and my family over pretty badly.

I do miss the Mushin and Kalista group, though, those guys were always cool, considerate, and chill. Mushin is great, but Davis county is so far, and I've kept putting off getting my license, so I have no way to get out there, and even if I did, it's pretty impractical, I heard some talk a long time ago about the possibility of Brandon taking over the Kalista school, if and when Will left. This was a long time ago, and since then, I think Will went back to Cali to teach at Inosanto, but I don't know, I've sort of been out of contact with everbody since the Chai seminar and since I started up at Westminster...

WOW, that sucks man. Im sorry to hear that they did that to you and your family. I love that restaurant! Its awesome! As far as I can tell, Will decided to stay here in SLC for a while. I lift with him once a week up at the Cove. I think he only teaches kids class now up there, and the rest of his students go out to Pedros place. I know Bountiful is a little bit of a drive, but try to call Brandon and see what he can work out. I know that Brandon teaches privates on Monday nights here in SLC. Maybe you guys can work something out.

          Take care bro,
