what do u guys think is more practical and effective, wrestling or judo ?

wrestling seems like it would be more reliable and str8 foreward, were judo is more complex and relies alot on gi. also, not only does wrestling make u strong, but almost all wrestlers lift weights too.

Technique wise wrestling, but a good judoka would always give a good wrestler a hard time. I prefer wrestling myself, but that's because I've never done much judo, though working out with a few judokas I know it's pretty damn good. Tough to say, all boils down to who's repping which style.

      Judo would have worked here...

Judo/MT Clinch work would have ended this one really quickly.

Good thing that guy had his friends to watch his back.

Judo has a number of pinning techniques, armbars, leglocks, chokes and (non-judo) dirty tactics in addition to the throws, it depends on who has the better skills in their respective styles.

I don't study judo but have seen what you are talking about. In a grappling session on the ground, I tried to grab a judo guys leg and round the corner to get him on his back, but he trapped my arm about forearm level between his knees and pinned me (side to the ground, his arms secured around my head) while proceeding to wrench my shoulder touching the ground(using his knees to do sort of a chicken wing)

Do you know what I'm talking about

Brilliant move; never seen it before.

Yes I have a good idea but I can't recall a name for it, Ude Garami is a bent arm lock and the variations are endless but it sounds like a combination technique or "double attack".

Practical and effective in what context? Fighting, sport, what? Wrestling has finishing moves but judo is designed to injure and maim. So while they are similar they are also completely different

Can you please explain what this means in english. What is more reliable, what does that mean? I don't see the difference in complexity you refer to, wrestling is more complex than you give credit. But again, the two styles have different goals which is why there is a difference in complexity

OK, does wrestling make you strong or does weight training. The answer is both. But judo makes you strong as well.....and guess what....Judo + weights=more strength

Dude just ask a sensible question.

Well at least you took my advice. This response makes more sense than your first post!! From this response I see that you desire intercourse with men. You speak of douchebag and I have to assume that is your clean-up routine as you are asking to have your salad tossed. Now while you use foggot in the genric sense of the word when referring to me. I would not choose to insult you, I am sure you prefer the proper term of homosexual or simply gay when referring to your lifestyle choice.

BTW - I did not attempt to insult you nor were the comments meant to be condesending, rather factual. However, in order to recieve an appropriate answer a question you have to ask an appropriate question. Again, you state "practical and effective" for what? Don't be mad at for your inability to communicate with the written word on the level of 4th grade or better.

wtf do u think i meant when i asked which was more practical and effective? nobody asks if its practical and effectivce for sport. of course i mean for real life situations and not sport. u say im on the level of a 4th grader, when ur the one who cant figure out a simple question and need it to be explained to u. everyone else seemed to understand the question i asked just fine, cept u. people like you who have problems always love to project their issues on others because they are in denial of their own inabilities and want to take the attention away from themselves.

wrestling has all these too. wrestlers are taught many self defense and finishing techniques that they cannot use on the mat, but are meant for the streets and real life confrontations, as well as dirty techniques.

i used to be a judoka myself. dont get me wrong, judo is an awesome art, but so is wrestling. i think plain folkstyle/freestyle/greco roman type wrestling is very underrated.

Well from what I read no one has answered your question and the responses you recieved were .. "well it depends."

Dude brilliant psycho-babble but like your post worthless.

I tried to explain did I not...they are completely different and I am stating that as a judoka and a wrestler. If you are looking for SD - wrestling is a sport that has combat application but that is it. Judo is a MA that alot of sport application. So the question of "practical and effective for what?" is legitimate. DO you want to learn becuase you are thinking about HS or college wrestling, MMA or purely for self defense, hey I don't know. Wrestling cannot compare to Judo becuase the goals are different and the techniques have a different emphasis. Which is essentially what I posted before. In a wrestling match pinning only I would take wrestling, in a full judo match I would take judo for the submissions. On the street Judo. Wrestling will only be a vehicle for the ground and pound (which is also not a bad thing)

Hey you can take from it what you will. My last response.

That's the kind! Thank you! yes, that's the name I was thinking of. The Ude hishigi hiza gatame... that's a mouthfull. As with other position and bodypart names in Japanese they leave much open to variations. Add to this a choke/crank using your hands-arms shoulders (or his) and it's a sight to be sure. Combinations are cool...

                            Respectfully,

It is MY opinion that "rough and tumble" or folk style wrestling though brutal is fairly primitive compared to the highly refined and scientific techniques of the Judo waza. The MMA is full of good wrestlers (greats) and they have their days to be sure but there's a beauty (read art) to submitting or choking out a big brutal "ground and pound" type fighter...

The problem is the lack of experience of the modern Judoka to deal with the more aggressive and less orthadox techniques and tactics of the brawlers. Reality in training is the way to good SD. IMHO.
