Let's not forget that these guys are PRO'S! This is what they do. I'll never forget playing ball once with Johnny Moore (former NBA player). After he nailed everything he shot, from ridiculously long range, I was just amazed at the level of his game (he'd been out of the NBA for years.)
I made that comment to his buddy, who commented.
Don't be surprised at all.. that's what he does for a living.
To think Joe Average, or even most people who "train hard" here would do well in a street brawl against guys who do this day in, day out, for years, as a profession, is just insane. Add to that the fact that some of these morons picking the fights have no idea who they're dealing with, and the results shouldn't be too surprising.
(Imagine 10 years ago, before most of us knew anything about NHB... seeing Renzo or Royler in a club. Would you think twice about "whacking" them? Probably not. They look like regular guys, nothing too intimidating. Can you imagine the results when you went to throw the drunken right hook? YIKES!)

The problem with BJJ is that even some purple or brown belt that no one really knows can be a very good fighter, and if he has combined some standup into his training, then he can be absolutely lethal against someone who has just got some boxing or even worse TAE KWON DO experience.
Has anybody had any experiences where they have had to fight someone who turns out to be a much better fighter than they first appeared to be?
A few years ago before I was doing BJJ, if I had thought that I was about to have a stand up fist fight with someone and they used a flying arm bar I would have shit myself..... What experiences do all of you have with guys pulling out unexpected moves in fights?

NHB guys in fights
I agree with Mako. People don't realize that these are very talented athletes that train extensively on a daily basis. Like Mako said with his comparison to playing even an long retired NBA player, the average guy does not realize just how good the elite people in their sport are. About the only way you have a chance to beat a pro is by getting him quick with NHB illegal tactics then making quickly for the door.

Bas Rutten was in a fight when he visited Stockholm. Here's what he told Sherdog:
“Rutten: I was in Sweden having a good time and apparently the bouncers didn't like me because they came to me and pushed me into another room separated from the audience. One said, you have to leave Bas (he knew who I was) because we don't like you around here or whatever. He starts to put his finger on my chest (you know, really irritating) and I told him not to touch me. Then another guy, you don't believe this, put his finger in my eye!! I couldn't believe it, and if it wasn't enough he did it again in my other eye, that's why I KO'd him at that point. Then all hell broke loose. Two more bouncers came in and I started to fight all of them, the guy I KO'd woke up and joined the party and tried again to pick my eyes out!! Man, what a fight, I was as drunk as hell and had to fight four guys. They pushed me down a big fire stair and we kept on fighting. Then when I was all the way down I saw a door and I thought that door would be open, I tried it and it was locked. I decided there to go and try to KO them as hard as I could, I turned around and they all bounced away from me, I thought" wow they can see it in my eyes that I really mean business now and there scared", not at all, when I looked behind me I saw the police standing there, THAT was the reason that they backed off!! Two of them went to the hospital, and I heard from a friend from Sweden that they looked like shit so my day was good. I was very lucky because I went two days to jail and to court and they wanted to lock me up for about six! months but luckily for me I had some friends on the outside who cooled the whole thing down.”
It doesn’t surprise me - bouncers in Sweden have real attitudes. But Rutten was lucky to get out of it that easy. Swedish courts don’t really have a realistic view on self defence.

Hmm... that story Bas said sure is vivid for someone who was drunk at the time... I think that most good martial artists would be perfectly able to defend themselves a one on one street fight 95 percent of the time. Being able to block and counter is a very valuable skill, so is hitting with power and keeping cool when confronted. The only arts that I know that would be useless in a street fight are most karate styles and possibly some poorly ran tkd school. Shito-ryu is a good example of a waste of 5 years, they concentrait on forms(95% of there "training"), their punches are only from the arm(your waste must be square at all times), they do that silly tradition of pulling your non stricking hand to your side, and they never spar or do bag/pad work. The blackbelts I know in shity-ryu are VERY cocky and are brainwashed into thinking that there techniques are vastly superior to those of the rest of the world(especially boxing)
keep it fresh

ehhe.. impressive stuff from bas..
he helped debunk the myths perpetuated from all those naysayers about the restrictive rules of the ring and blah blah blah.. he took on more than one opponent, and he survived a hit form the deadly, ultimate, eye gauge! ahah.. that should help shutup those people that rely on that crotch grab, eye gauge multiple opponent arguement when they talk about the effectiveness of cross training.. of coarse,Bas kicked there asses mostly because hes damn tough, but it helps though..

This wasn't a fight, but it was damn funny. Ken Shamrock and a couple other WWF guys were at one of the local bars hyping up an upcoming show in my city. One of the kids from my school was standing next to the table they were sitting and signing autographs at calling Shamrock all sorts of names. About 20 minutes into it, Shamrock stands up and clocks the kid in the head which kocked him on his ass. The kid gets up and just walked away. It was hilarious though.
