    Welcome To The Slo-joe Dojo

Speed,Speed and more speed !!! Velocity of a strike will have more force than slow technique with superhuman strength. If I toss a bullet at you It will do little or no damage but when it is fired from a gun it can kill. speed is the diffrence here. I think lack of speed in training is one of the plagues of modern martial arts training. I know you have all seen the ultra slowmotion dojo's Eg.... (The strike comes in now you take one step to the right slightly lean out of the way of the strike thats still on its way in now wait for the strike to pass by and grab your opponents lapel while he is still in motion from throwing the punch and then do a,b c & x,y,z techniques). Can we get real here

A quick tongue and an even quicker pair of feet!

I would rather choose perceptual speed and reaction time over hand/leg speed. Oh. I also want timing and accuracy.

                    Absolutely true.

However, in track you have an event called the fat man's hundred. This is an event for guys over 200 pounds, and they sprint a 50 yard dash.

You'd think they were slow. They aren't. Because their legs are STRONG, and that makes them great sprinters. Because sprinting is about strength, because the strength gives on speed.

You are right, the weightlifters won't be competing in sprints - if they don't run to compete. Runners run with the intention of competition, and so they compete in sprints. Except, if you look around, you'll find that some weightlifters DO compete in sprints. Because, strong legs makes a fast sprinter. Ask a track coach, don't just guess.

One must have power to lash the fist out quicker. One must have power to whip the fist and arm back quicker. You CAN be quick and still not have any power. You CAN be strong and still not have any power.

But to hit hardest, you must be strong, and that strength must be used to make you quick.

Speed and power, power and speed.

I'll be old, slow and weak but if I have GOOD TIMING my strikes will come from nowhere and land with "enough" power to do what I intend it to do.

There are a lot of misconceptions about this topic because as good as it is to be SUPER skilled in a martial art with both speed and power to go with your techniques, IF YOU LACK proper timing or use the wrong tool at the right time or the right tool at the wrong time in the dynamic chaos that is a real fight, you loose. To quote Pendekar de Thouars, "Strength is garbage. Speed is garbage. Timing is everything."

Speed is an illusion, it is the deception of the eyes by the distance (closeness) of your weapon that creates time. Power is useless without the TIME to direct it to the proper target. So it is that the hand is quicker than the eye, not that it didn't see you strike but at the distance it started from did not give TIME to respond with the foot or the hand. No retreat, no parry, no problem...Keep your speed and your power... How fast you think under stress will help you more than how fast you can run, react or recover. I find myself waiting sometimes for the reaction to one attack to draw the position I want to deliver my next attack. I'm not fast by any means, I never hit with all the power in one shot? But I stay ahead of time by variation of technique and knowing that A+B = > mass X Acceleration...

true with certian techniques moving too fast is just as bad as moving too slow.

yes to who told that story . the guys speed really didnt mean much if the guy was standing the whole time getting punched then the brawny guy took him with one good punch. but when im gonna fight its not gonna be in a ring. and if that guy was with out gloves i assure you his face will get cut. i had a smaller guy younger guy get me in my right brow' with a nasty cut. looks cool now . but if the guy wanted to he can cut his face or head open with some knucke shots or maybe even a good tiger paw.. or a nice eye gouge. this might not always be the case, but then again it also might.
