  • bruising for conditioning?

ok heres a good question for all you knowledgeable MA. i started taking uechi ryu from a guy in town and hes quite deadly with this art. hes bold enough to have strayed from the traditional side of it and has combined jiu jitsu and muay thai with it as well as some open palm boxing.now this guys teaches phone booth fighting. in close and personal . lots of trapping.he also teaches some filipino knife fighting as well as defense against it. there is also a kyokushin club in town that had a recent tournament which a guy from our class entered. now this guy has 9 months of uechi ryu and stands 5'6 maybe 145lbs. he was disqualified from both his fights but beat his opponents brutally. now ive been to this kyokushin school . these guys are tough but my teacher said they arent skilled in close fighting cuz they cant get a lot of kicks in at that range. now this teacher really impresses me BUT he is big into conditioning the shins , chest and arms. i mean beating them or bruising them to be tougher. is this method safe? will i develop serious problems from this later in life? once thanx for any response.

Sure, kill the nerves and eventually it will hurt less to hit them. They will toughen to some extent from repeated use but bashing yourself into a wad of scar tissue is kinda DRASTIC in my opinion... Better to work at it slow and toughen yourself by WORKING the areas that you want to focus on.

I still think my hand toughness, finger and hand strength was MOST IMPROVED by rock climbing!

Use dit da jow to heal the bruising. Use absorbine jr to kill the pain and use powdered bleach paste to form callouses(But not all at the same time). Ask your instructor about these methods.(or just try them) He will probally know about them. Don't over do it. Avoid bleeding and bruising large areas of the body as the healing taxes your immune system. Learn this! But also learn to fight at all ranges. I hope that helps......

Don't waste time conditioning and beating your body to the point of bruising. Why on earth do you need to do it? There are many many full time professional fighters who have never done body conditioning and they perform just fine. It is not necessary. It's all ignorance.

Look inward for the source of your ignorance

Same here.....Ive been there-done that....it will hurt and cause problems 20-30 years later....i'm there at 48,,,,hindsight or foresight....dont do it.

Basically, it was required long ago because society was more crude. The average life expectancy of fighters were 20's. These guys trained like that to add a few years to their survival. Modern society doesn't need this for survival.

If people ever did that stuff, it was only because they had lost their minds.
