  • I need help choosing a school in NJ!

I am a 21 yr. old female who recently took an interest in martial arts. I joined a one month trial at Tiger Schulman's in Paramus, NJ. I absolutely enjoy the street fight aspect of this school but am not thrilled with the way their classes are arranged. (there is no class for beginners and not much attention payed to you if you are one) Since I am new to this I am not familiar with the various kinds of martial arts in my area. I am looking for something that's a mixed martial art but am not sure where to begin or how to search. Any recommendations for me in the northern new jersey area?

It's a listing of BJJ schools in your state, but many of them have MMA programs or fighters in their club who could point you in the right direction.

Also, I'm glad you've decided to take your business elsewhere. Never settle for not getting what you paid for.

Not sure if you're looking for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school or not, but just in case, here is some info for you. Of course, I think anyone can benefit from some BJJ training, no matter what your primary martial arts focus is.
I attend the Royler Gracie - David Adiv (RGDA) bjj school, which currently is based in Livingston. The Livingston school is taught by David himself, who is an outstanding instructor, and Royler's US rep. Very technical school and detail oriented. Royler himself comes up once or twice a year for seminars and private lessons too.
There are a few schools other RGDA affiliate schools up in northern NJ too. Click here for some choices. You can't go wrong with any of them.
The Montclair BJJ school has a women's only class too, if that happens to be something you'd be interested in.

Don't forget about the 'Big Dog'. I don't know if he's in your area but well worth the drive.

Ricardo's academy is in southern NJ I believe. Too bad, but it would be one hell of a drive for each lesson.

You've gotta check out Rick and Amy Tucci at the Princeton Martial Arts Academy. Guru Dan Inosanto and Ajarn Chai come to town twice a year and the have a very broad cirriculum.
