  • vid clips of sport aikido (tomiki)

check out these clips of sport style tomiki aikido. tomiki broke away from Usheiba's group to form his own group based on sparring using aikido techs.
it's a great idea i think and as the clips show the art has some validity but mostly it dispels the usual showy demos that aikido people do.

ALSO check out the use of a tanto(short knife) when they spar. very interesting

    heres the link

    feedback please!

number 6 and 8 are good but judo would still be better for what they're trying to do

I have to say that it looks really sloppy. Sloppy to the point that it doesn't even look like those guys have any training.

Kenji Tomiki was one of the best Judo ka of the Kodokan training directly under Jigaro Kano. Kano sent him to Ueshiba proclaiming - 'this is the true Judo' -way of softness.

I think this says alot for the skill of Ueshiba and the effectiveness of his aikido. For a few of the best Judo Ka in the country to come to him from Jigaro Kano, it must have had something!

Kenji Tomiki created sport aikido from his Aikido and Judo knowledge - it is very much aikido in the main but has a definite Judo flovour especially in the competition aspect.

          Regards

This is very interesting and it is great to see aikido actually making something where you can spar. This will help aikido students actually be strong enough to use their techniques in a real fight situation.

but one thing I question is the knife. What the heck is that crap? It looks like the guy isnt even trying to stab the guy and then the other guy flips him over and the knife is obviously pressed against his torso. This is soooo unrealistic!!!! They need to work on that. The guy who gets the point for the joint lock and throw in real life would instead get the POINT OF THE KNIFE IN HIS TORSO in real life...

If they can work on that better I think it gives more hope for aikido and hapkido. I would like to see hapkido sparring.

I saw some valid looking knife parts but I am not a knife expert. I saw one guy disarm the knife which was cool. I just saw like 1 or 2 that didnt look very legitimate.

I just hope this sport aspect doesnt turn into what sport Taekwondo has. I hope the students still train in real combat techniques as well as the sport parts.
