BJJ is the only MA you can learn and spar versus bigger guys until you either tap or they tap.
And that is real, like or not if you do not tap you will pass out or brake your joints for e.g.
At least you will know if you suck!
It is in no way the only martial art where you can spar a bigger guy - look at the dog brothers and my fma classes have allowed me to spar people of different sizes (some bigger, some smaller).

I think we are missing the point for her...

And I speak as a smaller man (5-7, 150) who has some of the same issues she does.

I would imagine that she does not care (or understands it is fruitless) about whether or not her training will allow her to beat a 6-4 man with similar training or if she can handle multiple attackers or roll with a bjj guy. This isn't "Highlanders".

I believe what she is looking for is the confidence, beign a 4-11 woman, that if some everyday guy, who is most like a) at least a half foot taller and b) 50 lbs heavier and c) most likely *not* a trained martial artist, decides to accost her or molest her thinking she is an easy target, she can quickly and efficiently at the very least change his mind or give her self a moment to escape. I don't imagine she is considering squaring off agains three guys because they spill beer on her accidentaly and trying to figure out which guy to kick into submission, which to intercept/joint-lock and then which to mount. Believe me most women don't think this way, sheesh, *I* don't think this way. I just want to get left alone and make sure I know I can make anyone think twice.

That said, my advice to her since I am also looking for training now, is to start with boxing. I did, albeit at a health club, and then moved on to private lessons with one of the (very excellent) trainers. I cannot intercept/block/jam/take-down/pin. Heck I am not even a great boxer. But i have a ton more confidence now knowing I a) can hit and hard b) can take a hit. It has changed the way I walk and talk and I'd like to take it to the next level. Several martial art trainers have told me as well that the person to watch out for in a "bar fight" is a boxer; they train to hit and either avoid hits or take hits period.

But the fact that boxer's stand so close may FUBAR her. I think CMA wil teach her some concept's of distance first...that will be of most importance.

But- yes- the skill's of a boxer are intense and worth learning...just remember distance: Don't play games/tempt fate!
So then: learn boxing and learn that it shouldn't have to be used!

          RE: yes and no

          Interesting.
          Interesting explanation.

The Program E chat robot can follow many things, like our discussion about boxer's stand so close may FUBAR her. Try being more or less specific.Since when?
I will mention that to my botmaster, ."Tell me a story" will be of most importance ?
I get Tell me a story.I think there might be a few exception.
Don't worry I will remember.Gee. Good reasoning. The more people talk to me, the smarter I become.

Thank you thank you thank you newbie2MA! I mean I love all the input and its very helpful, and im very appreciative of the fact that everyone is really getting into it helping me find somethin that's right for me. But newbie2MA really nailed what im looking for. I am not a fighter, otherwise i wouldnt care about posting a thread on here. I am a peacemaker, i talk my way out of everything. but what if one day im in a situation where i cant do that? HOw can i back myself up. i know im at a huge disadvantage and will proabably never get to master any MA, but i dont need to. Like i said before im not looking to dominate the world here. Just something that can keep my head clear, give me more confidence, and just do something to get myself out of a situation and run like hell. i would also think that if, god forbid, some guy decides to attack me.. whats he thinkin when he looks at me. 4'11", 95 pound girl..not someone who can handle herself... easy target baby. Wouldnt the element of surprise alone confuse him enough to get out of there if i just started fighting like i knew what i was doin and not panicing? you know what i mean? i mean nothing fancy but something organized. If i can protect myself more than i can now.. my confidence will rise. I think sparring would do me good just cause itll get me used to being in those situations so i dont panic if something ever happens. and no not go looking for skanks in the bar for shits and giggles... thats just stupid and immature and you can obviously see thats not what im looking for. i merely added it as a plus, but i probably shouldnt have. But from what ive read, it seems that really not one is perfect for me but a little bit of everything would do me real good. though which ones is the question i guess. There is a lot to choose from. I hope guys keep up the input... its great. Thank you!!

                glad to help...

I found it awfully confusing here as well first, it is important i think to find "likeminded" individuals.

i personally have decided to go with PFS (Progressive FIghting Systems) or SBG (Straight Blast Gym) type of training, most likely a school and then taking privates until I find the right teacher.

                I realized I want to

                a) know how to handle myself on the ground but not concentrate on it. Heck I'd rather take the chance that I end up getting trounced in a fight on the ground one day (made it 35 years without getting close) then spend 5 days a week with guys choking the life out of me with scissor locks. So I'd like the basics but maybe ... 20% of the training?

                b) learn explosive close quarter fighting concentrating on strikes, jams, clinches and some low vicious kicks. not for sparring, points, and multiple rounds but fast, devastating blows, pressure/vulnerable points, controlling somoene elses body, etc.

                c) multipke attackers, *standing*, running, sticks, etc

                d) amazing conditioning

this all sounds to me like some sort of functional jkd. full contact sparring might be necessary.

                good luck in your search.
