        • Gracie Jujitsu is effective but it looks kinda gay when your doing the techniques because its like your on top of the guy on the ground and rolling around and trying to do the techniques. I don't feel comfortable using them

Well the car may win but it won't necessarily be a shameful loss. My Sensei told our class about one of his younger students who was playing and hit by a car. The kid was not only conditioned enough to automatically fall properly, but also either had the instincts or presence of mind not to try a breakfall immediately but just rolled like 3 or 4 times and came away with scratches.

Check out http://judoinfo.com/animate.htm and see the techniques... Now imagine them on pure concrete... Deadly, aren't they?

Some of those moves look like they need the opponent to be wearing a shirt or something. What if the opponent is sweaty and topless. Where do you grab?

                      • Best streetfighting style? Puerto Rican yu-do, as in [to quote Big Pun Si-dai] "YoU DOn't know if I have a gun [or a knife for that matter]."

Seriously though, the poll results accurately reflect my thoughts on the matter. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can take out pretty much anyone but you need MT or boxing skills to back it up. Does the "other" category include FMA's? B/c if we are including weapons, then FMA's would be my choice.

                        • completely disagree, rarely do you end up fighting a single opponent, thats all BJJ can cope with.

                          • True, but that's why I said you need MT or boxing (i.e. striking) skills to deal with any eventuality. That being said, someone said that when somebody disses BJJ "as being unable to deal with multiple opponents" you should turn around and ask them if their style could deal with just ONE opponent effectively. You'd be surprised at the answers you get. Is it true a kuk sool won teacher paid Gary Goodridge to wear a kuk sool won gi during the early days of the UFC?

                            • the "sport" martial arts generally are always best for self defense. it just cultivates a better fighter because it forces you to get better(mentall and physically) and to use your head because if you dont you will get your ass kicked. unlike practitioners who practice pre arranged motions with willing partners, sport martial artists can train very hard vs someone who is trying just as hard to beat them yet do it in a safe manner that wont hinder training. you have to outsmart and outperform your opponent in sport arts. this cultivates fast reflexes and quick thinking. even a highschool wrestler can be very dangerous because of all the experience he has gained in competing against other people who were fighting their hardes to beat him.

the essence of learning to apply a martial art lies in sparring. honestly, if you train somwere that doesnt have u sparring quite alot, it really isnt worth your time. of course you have to learnt he basics, but after that you need to start gaining experience in fighting all kinds of other people from all diff shapes, sizes, and skill levels so u can hone your skills and find techniques that work for you on a consistent basis.

thats why just about any of the sport arts are good, mt being my personal fav if i had to choose one.

MT is a great art, no doubt. But lets say you're out on the street and a handful of these martial artists were the badasses that were about to take you down and inflict some serious bodily harm or death?

They are trained to a high level of competence in ALL the popular SPORT arts, Champions! Now what?

Who are you training to defeat? The 350 lb. linebacker that's going to plant you for the stomping? Another martial artist? Do they "fight" like their life depended on "winning" No. They hardly guard their groin. They defend from the ATTACKS TYPICAL to the TYPE of sport that they are trained in. They attack only what is allowed by the rules...

I strongly suggest everyone that considers him/herself a "Martial" artist to be prepared to kill that guy and at least wound a few more before they kill you... Maybe they won't like bleeding so much, eh? Change their minds maybe? I think most of you guys are swell! Gentlemen with the best intentions and smart enough to stay away from trouble makers and avoid the idiots that start fights or kill without regard for the value of life at all.

But again WHAT are you training for? To play the SPORT? Or survive a "street" encounter? Because FRANKLY gentlemen you're deluding yourselves if you think that badass with the iron gives a shit what color your belt is or how long you study a sport.

It can go without mention that you will have an advantage (all right a HUGE advantage) over any, even many, UNTRAINED fighters UNLESS one or MORE of them have the INTENT to do you harm. If they have the INTENT (Malicious or murderous) they likely have a plan of their own. They carry a weapon! (or three). They know how to USE IT! They do use it and they INTEND to use it on YOU... Now what?

Take your beating like a MAN and hope he (they) doesn't keep ON STOMPING you after you're unconscious? Or that the doctors will be able to save you because you can survive anything? You're tough? shoot. Don't be stupid If you need to be on the street and can't avoid trouble or trouble makers then you need to be on equal ground with them and THEY are ARMED!

BJJ is GREAT fun I like it, right. Sambo Judo, all that MMA stuff is awesome ENTERTAINMENT and a tough sport! But it's hardly SD. What is self defense?

THE LEGAL JUSTIFICATION FOR USING DEADLY FORCE.

Martial artists are the best guys, I'm sure the champions of the sport realize the limitations. It's not armor. It can't make you smart enough to know what the Judge will allow in court or your own attorney WON'T ask you under oath!

Get a brain, if you just like beating people up you're in the right game... If you think it's going to make you "street" proof you're just being silly!

Arm yourself and study the laws regarding homicide. Be prepared! Really prepared! Not to use a weapon but to know the right reasons to USE a weapon.

And use a weapon. Hands and feet are deadly weapons, right? Techniques deadly, "art" deadly?... Or are you just playing? Any Martial art should teach the use of some form of weapon. Otherwise anyone armed has an advantage over your training. Just think about that...

                                I'm asking YOU! To think.
