Kamikazee Killers

Hey folks, I'm doing another research project and need your input/help.

To us they are killers but they see themselves as Warriors. I'm talking about Kamikazee Killers. The type that attacked Pearl Harbor, and the type that struck on 911, and the type that are striking in Isreal and Iraq.

What motivates these suicide bombers? How do you defend? Was Pearl Harbor defendable? What about 911? Can we defend ourselves against Kamikazze Killers/Warriors?

Any comments or reference materials will be greatly appreciated. What about this concept of premptive strikes? Is that really Defense or is it offense?

here's what we should do

rebuild the wtc exactly as it was except for more fire proofing and then install an air defense misslie system that willl shoot down any plane that comes near it, then declare all of ny city a no fly zone, so everone will understand, just reroute the air traffic

"Kamikaze" came later in the war. It's an act of desperation and strong faith in religious dogma...

You have several questions but I will focus on one area of your post.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was was not a Kamikaze mission. That was a preemptive strike on the US Navy which they viewed as the most powerful threat. Even the Japanese mini-subs that came into the harbor to launch torpedos were supposed to return to their respective "mother" ships...

Kamikaze squadrons of pilots were a tactic to demoralize the US forces. and only came about because they wanted to stall for time to rebuild their war machine.

After the battle of Saipan (AKA the Marianas Turkey Shoot, aka the Battle of the Philippine Sea ) in June 1944, the Japanese navy had lost more than 500 carrier qualified pilots.

"Japanese leaders knew America possessed vast resources but believed she lacked the stomach for the horrors of kamikaze attacks. Some Japanese believed the Kamikaze tactics would raise the stakes of the war and break the American will to fight. What Japan lacked in resources and equipment, it attempted to make up for in fighting spirit."

IMO you can't put the kamikaze in the same category as the suicide bombers. The kamikaze were uniformed soldiers attacking military targets in a state-sanctioned (openly declared and legal) war. Their actions were shocking at the time, but fall under acceptable norms of jus in bello and jus ad bellum (do a google search on these terms, they have to do with the justice of war (jus ad bellum) and the justice of the means used to fight war (jus in bello)).

Check out Michael Walzer's books, esp. "Just and Unjust Wars". He talks about pre-emptive war at length - justified in his mind.
