Mmm I would have gone if I knew cakegirl was going. Since I tap blue belts, I would be 'tapping' cakegirl for the entire trip.

Info on the cruise is at http://www.gracieacademy.com/cruise.html

Basically, the Gracie Academy books a whole lot of cabins, and rents the sun deck on the boat for certain periods in the day. Then we all get on the boat, train, eat, train, drink, dance, gamble, sleep, train, eat, train, drink, dance, gamble, go to Ensenada, train, eat, train sleep and then go back to LA.

            (I'm speaking generally. Personally, I don't gamble.)

It's a lot of fun, and a great opportunity to train with Helio (he's 93 now, there's no saying how much longer this will be going on...) and to meet BJJers from all over.

danfaggella, I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if I'm entering... I thought you meant am I going on the cruise, but I said that in my first post, so I'm not sure what else you mean...

To train with Helio when hes 93, you mean trian WITH him, like roll with him, or just have him instruct you, I dont care how good he is at BJJ, if your 93, your not beating many people in a fight...

              That cruise sounds awesome though.

I'm sure he has the best technique of any body alive, thats believable.... honestly could he apply it, would he be quick enough to capitalize on everything, and would he have the mobility.... hmm I dont know, Id like to give him a go lol.

Helio still rolls. I'm not going to be one of those blind Gracie worshippers and tell you that he's amazing and otherworldly, but he definitely gets in there. When he's instructing, he'll get in there and demonstrate - I've seen him show guard passing, chokes, etc. Today, I saw him guillotine Rener, but Rener let him do it.

For 93, he's a very spritely and mobile guy, loves a joke, and loves to play rough and tumble. At the IGJJF Open this weekend, there was a constant stream of people coming up to him and bowing to him, and asking for a signature or to pose for a photo etc. But this one guy went up to him and asked Helio to RNC him for a photo, and Helio thought it was the funniest thing ever. You should have seen the guy cracking up as he's choking this 20-something dude!

The key to staying "young", I guess is to keep active, and to have a passion to live for.

I think Helio would be ok in a BJJ match with rules nowadays but a street fight is different. Have you seen the powerslam that Quinton Jackson did to Ricardo Arona to get him to let go of his submission? Just imagine Helio (weighing in almost as much as a well-fed cocker spaniel) getting slammed by someone of that power, not a pretty sight.

Good luck on your cruise, sounds cool.

No , no i havent seen the rampage slam on Arona, ive looked and looked and looked, but I have never been able to find it anywhere, if you know where it is can you tell me, ive never been able to find it.

Yes Rampage fighting Helio could be kinda funny.... and fatal....
