hi all i am about to buy my first GI and i was wondering what the different colours mean?? Also are there any events for newbs in the uk??
thanks in advance
mikie
Yeah why not black ? My instructor doesnt mind.. I have a blue, white and jeans material one made by krugans.. I guess whatever gi you like go for it.. White is okay except it gets dirty easily and personally i am not a bleach fan.. i dont really care if mine looks dirty though as long as it is clean..
I don't have a good reason why no black. I just see black belts frowning upon black gi's sometimes. Maybe black is reserved for Helio Gracie? I don't know. I just know that some traditional BB's prefer their students to have white, and blue is a distant second favorite.

Black Gi was the color of choice for one club but we were all badasses that played by our own rules. Blood stains a white Gi but not so much on black.
A person who is said to be proficient in the arts is like a fool. Because of his foolishness in concerning himself with just one thing, he thinks of nothing else and thus becomes proficient. - Hagarkure
Much of the nature of the martial arts in Japan had its origin in the Shintoism (the original religion of Japan) that was restored by the New Japanese Mejia regime in the 1890's - and the "Emperor" once again was recognized as a "God." Within Shintoism "White" was symbolic of "Purity".
"Black" by its very nature took on the opposite meaning: night- death- evil. The message the "Black Gi" sent was...an indication of "Death and Bruising." To this day Traditional Japanese and Okinawan tournaments will not allow the wearing of a "Black Gi"
That is something I haven't heard of.When was this exactly?Where did Black by its very nature take on the opposite meaning night- death- evil?Is that a fact.
I have never heard of an indication of Death and Bruising.Interesting. I want to find out more about you.
In the context of htm, I don't understand "Be less specific smile."
For most competitions, you're only allowed to compete in white or blue. For that reasons, most BJJ schools only let their students train in white or blue. Some schools are more traditional, and require white only.
My recommendation: for a first gi, buy a cheap white one. When you've been training for a while, you'll know what your requirements are in a gi (i.e. you might tear your first one apart at the shoulder seams and know you need one with extra stitched shoulders. You might rip open the crotch and know you need thicker pants, etc), and then you can spend bigger money on a gi to suit you. And by then, you'll know what your school will accept.
where is the best place to buy GI from??
black does look so cool
Yeah cool.... Just like a Ninja, eh?
Black is not good if you work out or train outside the Dojo. When the sun is out and it's 95 degrees in the shade you'll wish your ninja costume was white.
