  • want class, cant find one.

    i want to get into a martial arts class where i can get some real experience, somewhere i can learn valid lessons on technique and body mechanics andwho has been stuff. I would prefer it to be mainly grappling, though i dont mind striking.

    i recently went to this dojo with my friend fromt he wrstling team has been taking classes there for about a decade. i wanted to just go in there and grapple with him, and the shihan was going to watch and analize. i figured that if classes were like this, i would join, because i love to grapple. so this kid weighs 20 something lbs more than me but i tapped him out every time, pretty easily, like 7 times or so. this bothers me, he has been training here for 9 years, he should be tapping ME out, im just some kid who grapples on a trampoline wiht a few boys, reading from judo books and never having read martial arts guidence. now im learning how the belt system works, with its "FORMS" and all that. it seems as if getting a black belt is allot of tradition and not so much real sparring. i see a lot of pseudo fights, where they pretend to hit each other, and i see a bunch of standing there punching air. this is what i DIDNT like about the other local martial arts establishments i lived near, and now this one apears to be no different. i wouldnt be surprised if i could beat my freind in a fight, even though he has expereince in all the striking arts at this dojo, because all he does is punch air and fake fight, rarey sparring.

    i'm not the only guy who doesn't like this "traditional" stuff. this is not what i want to take from martial arts, i just want to learn real practical skills in a valid martial art, no BS. (i shouldnt call it BS, but i just dislike it). I dont want to go through the belt system or even take these normal classes. i hope i can just pay the shihan to let me come in whenever grapplingis happening, and just spar until my muscles ache and i've sweated out gallons, learning from the knowledge of the shihan, but i dont know if this will be allowed.

    is there any way to take a martial arts class that is valid in practicallity more than tradition?

    :{

    thanks allot

    "a martial arts class that is valid in practicallity more than tradition?"

    Welcome to the world of mixed martial arts....

    Look for a school that teaches MMA, like they list it as teaching MMA, or BJJ as you said you really enjoy grappling. Also make sure there is at least some sparring or "rolling" (grappling sparring) going on. Maybe not in every class, but there should be at least SOME.

    Oh and, it may have just been that kid that you beat, I had only about 4 classes and alot of "trampoline" wrestling as you called it, and I destroyed a person who had been doing it for two years, maybe made him tap 3 times in 2 minutes.

    Although there are a alot of people there, including a very small girl, who can destroy me easily, without even trying.

        thats what bothers me, this kid has been doin it for 9 years and im just some dweeb reading books on judo and ufc matches, grappling with my boys, and i can beat him, makes me question how good the class is.

        i just hope i will be able to just show up whenever there is grappling going on at this dojo, and i will grapple with anyone, even if i get killed by 170lb guys every time, i just want expereince under guidence of a REAL PRACTICIONER instead of with a bunch of kids on a trampoline.

        i think if i get into this more and more i will make it a big part of my life.
