  • life of a martial artist?

how many people live the life of the martial artist? like, train allot and with different people, traveling and going to events, constantly evolving and expereincing new things in new places wiht new people in the name of martial arts? is this lifestyle only reserved for people who have been in martial arts since early childhood?

i dont know what im doing with my life yet, but i sure as heck wont be pushing pencils, and this kind of a life seems so interesting, though i myself most likely will not make it my own, but i cant say anything for sure

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but many martial artist are just your average Jo who decide they needed to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones. Many of the guys that train in my dojo, are kind, fit, well rounded individuals who are just cool to hang out with. I think we're all normal people who want to get married and have kids and have long happy lives. There's a very evident stigma around martial arts, as if people think that we're all to be spartan warriors who train to become rock-solid killing machines. I mean could you imagine what you would answer someone about "The Life of A High School Basketball Player" They spend alot of time training and go to many competitions, but still basketball is very much not their first perogative. It's the same way with most martial artists.

As far as an occupation goes, you might consider police work,a body guard, even a martial arts instructor. Probably, alot more than this. I think its great that your starting martial arts though. Its a great way to improve yourself in almost every aspect of fitness. I think everyone has a time in their life when they don't know what they're gonna do with it (their life). Thats when you just start improving yourself. Your Charachter, your relationship with God, your body,etc... Be the best person you can possibly be.

I realize this post is long and largely non-sequitor. Hope its of some help and I hope I didn't wildly miss the point of the question.

very well put i think. i think it would be great to not have to work 72 hours a week and be able to train the body, mind and spirit. would be most excellent.

        one thing though

if you're a full contact fighter don't talk about your fights/people you've knocked out and how funny it was, many of the "normals" will think you're nuts or some kind of sadist for being a fighter and alot of women see it as a red flag. there will aslo be chicks who are attracted to guys who hurt peole via fighting, pushing their employess around at work or are mean to waiters, waitreses and other people who provide services to them, these women like some kind of power dynamic thing, take my advice and stay the hell away especially if they train at the same school/gym you do, don't go there.many fighters have developed an ironic sense of humor about fighting to laugh away anexiety so they say over the top stuff like i love to hurt people e4ct ect ect, we all know they are kidding and just being goofbalss /having fun but when "normals" here this stuff they don't see it the same way so stfu, save it for the gym.

im not even part of a dojo YET, and if i was, im not going to deticate to NHB fighting, most likely just grappling arts. I'll do some mma but mostly grappling stuff (which kinda is mma... i mean there are plenty of grappling arts)

          Eager_Neophyte, good stuff youdaman.

i think that i wont be able to work all day at a vocation where im getting nothing but money outof it. if that is the case, i will wish the work hours would be over, and i would spend allot of time toiling and wasting time, not gaining skill, not getting in shape, not accomplishing much besides getting my check, this isnt the life i want. however, im a good student, and i feel that maybe throwing away my education for martial arts which most likely doesnt require too much might be a waste. However, im not in college til septeber, so i will have allot of time to feel out what i want to do with life, its all so hard.

          further commentary is ALWAYS appreciated.

so i will have allot of time to feel out what i want to do with life, its all so hard.
Sounds like you have it pretty easy to me. No kids, No job, not in school, not in a dojo working out all week long.

You dont have to sit down and decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. Get out there and start doing anything constructive that interests you. Start learning culture and use this time off to learn as much as possible. You will find stuff that interests you. You will find things you want to be a part of. Paths will be revealed and one day you'll realize that you are doing what you enjoy. But if you waste time not getting involved, time will pass and all you'll be able to think about is all the things you could have done...if you'd only had the time.

It's great that martial arts is interesting to you. Why not find out how much it really interests you and start making it a part of your life. Who knows, you might not like it at all. It might just be the idea that interests you and you'll move on to other things. Then again, you might find that nothing interests you more, and it will consume you. Point is; dont waste time wondering, just get out there and find out what you want to do. Noone else can find out for you.

              exactly,

i look back on some points in life and i see how i was wasting time completely, now i try to spend all my time constructively, one way or another. Im checking out a BJJ place in providence RI and one that is opening in cranston RI, i hope to gain allot of expereince there. plus i already grapple whenever i can with my boys, we video tape it even, we are all decent grapplers and we want to grapple real BJJ students, i sure hope i will love it as much as i think i will.

well none of it is digital but i think there is a way to get tapes on the internet, I'm not sure how.

also, what do people who make thier living off martial arts take in college? i mean, i dont see how physics or european history or archiology would help someone who wants to make a living in martial arts. do they just take personal finance or something?
