i noticed someone complained that the few attempts at holds or ground work were broken up by fight fans...welcome to the streets...they usually stand you back up (if they dont stomp your head in) in prison..alleys... bars...places that "bad people" are found in great numbers...no one wants to watch a boring fight...oh yeah they stand you back up in the military in "barrack brawls" as well

A major part of martial arts and surviving assault is awareness of your enviroment.
if you "run" up behind most martial artists i know they will hear you coming...awareness of enviroment. if you Do get ambushed and kicked down stairs...maybe its not a fight in your mind but it is still going to require a hospital visit....but to further the point if you run up, and talk shit and then turn your back and get kicked down the stairs, well that is one guy imposing his will on another thru violence so while it may not be the text book definition of a fight i certainly think its relevant to the martial arts and threat assesment...or survival on the streets if you will.

note there were many empty seats he could have moved to...he chose to ignore this possibility and the asshole behind him...perhaps awareness training would have caused him to think to himself..."f this guy...i aint fightin over this seat ...ill get up and move to a point above and away from this ass so i can keep an eye on him and the game...yeah ill grab a coke a get a new seat on the way back..." Was that capt cools response? no. does getting up and moving to another seat make you look like a tough guy? no. does it avoid a fight over nothing? yes. Will it save you a hospital or jail visit? yes. Ever heard the expression the highest art is to fight without fighting? out thinking your opponent and removing his ability to attack you from behind is exactly that...

ive seen people die at soccer games in amsterdam, soccer is rough crowd in europe, most stadiums seat the oppositions fan in there own area, completely fenced off from the rest of the arena and surround it with police. On the subway to one of the games, a bunch of teen holligans came on at one of the stops and starting bashing out lights and smacking people with sticks and yelling this and that....for some reason they didnt bother me and my buddy, then they got off at the next stop.........ever go to europe, go to a soccer game, it BEATS the shit outta ANY sporting event in the USA..cept for MMA of course

It disrespects the whole assets of fighting, which i'm ashamed to watch. Martial Art's, is the art of self-defense. However, I do agree with you that it could've been avoided. As well as Martial Art's being the art of self-defense, I also personally find that it teachs the aspect of true peace and philosophy. All my years of Martial Art, I found that I have grown, not only in strength, but wisdom. You don't know how short life is until you experience life.

uh, in your haste to disagree with me you made a basic mistake...I NEVER said the guy who kicked the victim down the stairs did anything right...I said the victim failed to realize the danger he was in and failed to outthink the attacker....the attacker just took the cheap shot left open to him...there was forewarning of a problem...right before the victim turned his back on the man above him they were arguing...right then the victim failed to realize the potential "deadly ground" he was on and move to a less dangerous spot...

My point was as a martial artist you should be aware of your enviroment and the possible threats to your well being when in public places known for violence (a soccer game!) and realize the world is full of assholes who are sick and will take a cheap shot if you let them. Do you lock your doors to your home? alright then...watch your back when you just finished arguing with an idiot behind you with the potential to boot you down the bleachers...

Ah...but it's that type of presumtious mentality that breeds agoraphobics.
Paranoia isn't a key thing to being a martial artist.
So just stop thinking that everything is preventable. Sometimes shit happens, you cannot always see everything coming at you.
You try being too aware and you tend to anticipate...when you anticipate, your in fear....why be afraid all the time? Even if it's manifested in machismo and posturing...you may have won the battle...but you've already lost the war.

I dunno...just my metaphysical 2 cents up in the hizzie.
