  • one legged takedown

i have two instructors one is bjj/vale tudo and the other is a freestyle olympic wrestler. They tell me different things when it comes to shooting in for the legs. I would like to get peoples opinions on where your head should be when struggling with the one legged takedown. taking your oppponents right leg should you put your head one his right hip or on the inside on his stomach.
i understand these are two different takedowns but my bjj instrucktor is adamant that my head should go on the inside and my wrestling coach says id never take a good wrestler down that way and that i should do the takedown his way. anyones oppinion on this would be appreciaciated.

it is possable that one is more effective in valetudo and one is more effective in wrestling.

possably because nobody strikes in wrestling?

Good answer but that was not the explanation given by my coachs. both just showed me how i was volnerable to being taken down when i did it the other way. My wrestling coach said that if i put my head on the inside my head could be pushed down and sprawled on. then my bjj coach said that with my head on the outside i could be easily turned around. they both demonstrated what they meant and they both seem to be right. i understand that there is a counter to everything but what i was hoping to establish was which was better. I already asked my coaches but they wernt impresed with me bringing up something i learned from someone else to contradict what they were saying.

there are thousands of such examples in martial arts, punch this way or that way, spin this way or that way, allot of it is almost equal, and works differently with different people, try them both out foryourself and get a feel for what you like the best.

I'd say against a wrestler, keep it on the outside, against a BJJ guy, keep it on the inside, shouldnt be too hard to remember... , or just pick whichever you like more, if you like keeping it on the inside, take the chance you might get sprawled on....

if u keep ur head on the outside vs the bjj guy, he can take ur back easily or guillotine u. thats why ur bjj instructor tells u to keep the head on the inside.

-its ok on the outside long as you keep your shoulder high to defend against the gulliotine, that way when you fall you have side control right away

I think your head to the side is easier. It allows you to get just a little closer, making it easier to get your hips underneath them for leverage. But really you should learn as many takedowns as possible. Find which one you, personally, are more confortable with...and can make work more often, and refine that. Its good to know more than one way of doing things.

thanks alot for the replies i guess to sum it up there are no right or wrong answers just different answers. i find with my head on the inside i can fight for the body lock if the one legged takedown fails so ill stick with that.

                    whatever....

if your head is on the outside you need to drive through their body with your head (push with your ear) and dump them off to the side.

If your head is in front you can flop them straight back without hitting your head on the ground, and easy to defend against the guillotine...

work with what you can get.

In the first place, I personally would rather go for the double-legged takedown. But in the time I had done the one-legged, remember to always keep your head to the side of the leg which you have grappled. In wrestling, the most they might do is do a cross-face move, but if you have your face directly planted on the side of his leg, it shouldn't be as hard to avoid. And perform the one legged takedown fast, try not to give your opponent the advantage of time.

And this is coming from someone who has wrestled for 6 years.
