I'm a big fan of Howard Gi's (howard Combat Kimonos), but am told that they are retarding my development (impeding my hip movement, making me lazy about protecting my collars), so I ordered a Sirius Gi, which I have heard abslolutely nothing but great things about (siriusathletic.com).

I wear a cup and a short sleeved rashguard under my gi. Many others don't. up to your preference.

rash guard fits tightly, is slippery compared to cotton t-shirt. Also wicks a way prespiration (tshirt doesn't).

some use a tight tshirt, I prefer underarmor/reef/whatever rashguard.

Okay thanks for the tip, Ill go with a t shirt for now and maybe up it to underarmour later...

So yesterday I got my gi... ta da... it was pretty cheap... bout 109 Canadain... well I guess thats cheap... relatively.... it was funny cause I was trying it on and didnt even know which was the front of the pants.... I got some guy to help me though lol.

So now that I have it I have a few more questions for you guys.... theres... a string... type thing that goes around the top of the pants, kinda like a belt... and both ends come out at one side, I assume I'm just supposed to make the pants tight enough to stay on with it , and then tie it off there?

Also there were two belt loops in the pants... but I thought the belt went over top of the jacket thing... where exactly does it go?... and how exactly am I supposed to tie it.... Ive attempted to look for this stuff on the net, but I think you guys could give me some nice direct answers.

            Thanks.

OK, lessons on 'how to dress yourself like the other big boys' lol

The trousers have a 'cord' which runs through the inside hem of the trouser waist. It should wrap from the front, round the back and than come out through the side slits on each side of the trousers. Basically you should see some cord dangling out each side at the top, if you dont you need to make the cord do what I described above.
You then pull the cord so it is tight arround the waist and thread it through the two loops at the front and tie the two ends in a bow. Exactly where you tie it does not matter, some tie it directly at the front, traditionaly I think you would tie it on the right but whatever...

Once your trousers are on, put your gi top on and wrap the left lapel over the right. Then put the belt on. Place the centre of the belt on your front in the centre and wrap it round yourself till it gets to the front (just like the cord on the trousers.

Belt knot varies but this applies to all variations: Take one end and push it over the other end and under BOTH belt lengths, then tie a single knot with the two ends. You can vary the order in which you do this to make it look like everyone elses in the class.

Once youve done all this you can go play with the other big boys

                  You might THINK that now....

Here is a link to some instructions to tie your Gi belt (with pictures)

The Judo belt (obi) is wrapped twice around the body with the center of the belt just below the navel. Then a knot is tied in front as shown below. The ends

and I rolled with a brown last night... that wasnt too hard, all I had to do was tap either of my hands on the floor repeatedly....

                    haha.

Now, what if both hands/ arm are tied up?

Learn to tap your partner or the mat with your feet also!
