Thank for the kind word bros,

I think that my stint in armed forces was been the darkest of my life, but it served the purpose to make me understand what would be to be under a repressive power, under a hierarchy based only on preying and terrorize.

Sometime I think that this is the cardinal sin of all the human race. We strive to reach power at all cost even committing acts of immense cruelty and disregard of human values, only to be left at end of the struggle with our sould shattered, seeking only a small amount of peace.

But that's only after war, after the horror...

I consider myself lucky to be able to exit this barely touched, albeit with some scars...

I've had a very good friend of mine, we were buddies at highschool, almost constantly stoned... he did serve in air force, Guard regiment VAM. In a 365 days he did 200 armed guards, 24h turns watching hangars, rain or snow. The discipline of the regiment is legendary in Italy; it's the tour of duty with the highest % of suicides and with the power of grandfather at the max peak. He didn't revealed never to any of us friend what they did to him but he returned from here completely broken. He was dismissed for psychological problems, now, after 13 years he had recovered almost fully. We suspect he was raped here (I know it's strange to say, but it had happened, when a soldier testimonies is usually a national scandal). He was never the same guy "Vito" (his name) that hung with me at h-school. The list goes on and on.

Recently,a member of the Para regiment (abn) was found in a base with hid spine shattered; the authopsy estimated that it was left on the ground for an entire two days in agony. Later investigations confirmed that he was forced to climb a 75 ft rope hanged to wall because he suffered of altitude phobia; when he was tired he was ordered to climb higher, eventually he fell down, his spine broken, his cries were listened to some but noone dare to help him.

Similar stories are endless, s.hit, I've opened a wormcan of memories...

Surely conditions in the Italian armed forces have improved havent they? I find it strange that modern day U.N. Nations have not punished or have investigated such matters. Isnt this a breach of human rights?

Back until one year ago, call on duty was abligatory for every male able to serve, but now armed forces are open only to professional soldier, and that is a HUGE step forward, however, consider that bulliying, in whatever form, is a common trait in military life, some bases are worse than others, as a general rule, the more isolated and disciplinated, are the worst.

Following the para soldier death, there was a national scandal, that led to a surge of indignation in the italian people, following that, it was discovered a booklet, distruibuited by a para colonel in a base, it contained a series of rules and indications about life in base, it contained racism and preached reèression (we from sardinia, and people from sicily were equipared to "******s"). The colonel was fired from A.forces and a huge reform of the highest ranking officials was done.

Back when an Italian contingent was sent to Somalia, to aid population during the civil war, some paratroopers torured a woman inserting a grenade in his vagina, and a young man was also interrogated with aid of eletric schoks to the testicles with a camp telephone, what's worse is that this was photographed.

Luckily the photos got in hand of a journalist from "Panorama" (A very popular magazine") it was the worst scandal ever.

What is worse is that the italian armed forces was ever known for their kindness even in war situation. Back in the world warII we they were adored by people even in warfield. We were billed as "Italians, good people" by african population, by yugoslavian, by Russian. Even in the grip of fascism, italina soldiers had not commited athrocities against weak people...

After pondering it alot, for me the answer to what is happened in many bases in Italy is dued to massive boredom, and for the fact that the vast majority of people there didn' wanted to be a soldier.

But now, with the reform of the army I hope it will be all better.

BTW, we had fared splendidly in Yugoslavia, expecially the contingent I was into, lang ago.

I did CPR for a week, nothing serious, and no, it didn't show on my personal record (but I was on trial two times for aggravated assault and battery, but that's another story...); I was held in a cell without either my belt and shoelaces (for fear of suicides), but at least I slept alot..

Yella, the new year seem to bring some sort of hope: if everything will go according to plans I will open my own little academy!

Soon I will post a thread to get hints for a cool name!

                      Underdog:

It is my fond hope that in the New Year I can learn to handle trolls and other provocateurs with as much dignity and class as you and my other friend, Ryu.

Sorry about your military experience...this is the type of thing that makes me nervous about militaries in general. I remember reading about that Somalia incident. American soldiers did the same thing in Okinawa, and recently in Kosovo. So unfortunately, the military attracts some real scum, who like hurting people. Hopefully, this will get better with better screening procedures.

Good luck with your academy. I still say your English is better than many of the native-born speakers on this board. Certainly better than the average poster on the UG/OG.
