okay, i have been doing bjj for about 6 months now...i train 4 days a week on average. yesturday me and some friends were just fooling around and wrestling on the carpet. i find that its hard to keep them down and control them. they just spaz and use all strength. i'll for for an armbar or a triangle choke..but by the time im halfway there they are trying to stand up or use force to get out. i know im still new and learning but it bothers me.

yeah Im in the same boat too.. Ill mess around with my friends some time.. I usually just play the guard game with them. I couldn't get an armbar because on of my friends had his chest close to mine.. Too bad he didn't have a gi on or I would've choked his arse out.. I almost triangled him too but I was too much in front of him and couldn't get my leg hooked under my knee. Another friend went for a sloppy takedown and i spraweld out and somehow mounted him.. when he turned over i took his back and rear naked choked him though.. haha it was nice to see all my hard efforts pay off.. I have been training 6 months as well and have been going about 4 times a week up until about a 1 1/2 months ago.. I think its because we are still new... Also do you traing gi or no gi ? i only train gi.. I want to start training no gi though to get used to the idea that people on the street wont be wearing a gi.. haha

I've been doing bjj for about ... 3 months maybe... well no, actual bjj for about a month.. but other grappling for about 3...
My friend wanted to "UFC" me... so I got him to come to a no-gi class, he tried to push me over so I went with it and put him into gaurd, he spazzed for awhile, I tried for an armbar, he slipped out of it, and I worked my way so he was in my gaurd again... after about 4 minutes of spazzing, where I couldnt submit him, and me just lying their breathing.. he was super tired.. at which point I swept him, submitted him, then before we started again he said that he was tapping out due to tiredness.
Point:.... Your friends who "spaz" on you... you wont really be able to tap out with ease... but after awhile you will get them, just playing the waiting game... it may take you awhile to get them, but you ahve no fear of them getting you so its not a problem.. plus they are done after about 4 minutes or so lol.
As you get better though I'm sure you will find yourself tapping them in seconds.

i grapple alot with my friends too,i have lots that spaz out like that and its so funny.The key to beating spazzers is to fake em out,i usually just play round and pull guard an pull an arm-triangle choke from the bottom and that 95% of the time works and if it doesnt i fake it and switch right to a kimura...that combo has worked for me 100% of the time i used it.I used to have trouble getting my triangle choke on big people but then i tried a variation and it worked beter,when u throw ur legs up for the triangle scoot back on your shoulders and then twist your body in toward his hips and keep twisting till he taps,try that out and see if it works.

I have rolled just about all of my close friends including a few who are wrestlers and a couple that are much bigger than me. They usually play the spaz game at which point I usually just try to play the guard + good cardio routine which usually results in them doing most of the work and me waiting on them to gas out.

The coolest part about grappling with your friends is that you know you aren't in any danger of getting submitted.. haha so you get to just be on offense the whole time. Yeah its funny they spaz out. when i was rolling with one of my friends, another was like "get him in an armbar" so I went for one and my friend totally spazzed out. it was funny because they don't know what to expect.. haha just thinking about it

Let them spaz! They'll tire themselves out eventually and then it's easy. Instead of going for a submission from the guard, go for a sweep or take the back. That's when untrained people REALLY panic and tire themselves out. When you're on the top, feel how they are pushing and change position to compensate.

Good observation
This is actually an insightful observation. BJJ has caught on like wild fire in the US. Most guys between the age of 12 and 40 know about it now. When BJJ up against a handful of everyday martial artists in the early UFC it was obvious how effective it was. It was smooth and impressive. It looked easy.
Every martial artist who did not have an emotional attachment to pure striking arts wanted to learn it. Turns out that in a fight against someone who is at least aware of the common dangers in ground fighting such as exposing the back and giving up an arm or getting into a triangle, BJJ is not as easy. BJJ in fights now resembles wrestling more so than the elegant art we saw when nobody in the USA knew what it was.
Many are surprised when they begin training in BJJ that a stronger opponent who knows just a little can overpower and defeat them or at least escape. This is a real wake up call to those who rely on grappling to the exclusion of striking. Which is all the more reason to 1. get in shape, 2. get as strong and fit as possible, 3. learn all ranges.
Martial artists in general have always struggled with the idea that a brawler who is athletic and mean can defeat a person who knows “secrets” about martial arts. This is reality, however. Martial arts only increase your percentage chance of survival, the do not ensure it.
Knowing how to do something is different from being able to do something.
