  • Is Freestyle Wrestling effective?

I'm looking for a grappling art to add to my striking but don't have the time.

I thought I might just sneak in a grappling art by taking up wrestling at my school.

Is freestyle wrestling effective in a fight? If so, how?

Is it very effective? Little? Moderate?

    Is it practical? Thanks

yeah its good, especially because u can do it for free. its pretty effective, especially when added to striking skills. it also gets in good shape and makes u stronger since weight lifting will be required as well. luckily u will have a coach help u guys make great strength gains i bet. also, in order for it to be effective in real life, u have to be able to realize which techniques and strategies in wrestling are great for the street vs those that are great only in competition. i wish my highschool had wrestling, that would have been awesome.

wrestling is kinda like giless judo. lots of throws, trips, slams, and takedowns. wrestling has really influenced bjj also. ove been noticing theres been alot of wrestling ankle pick, arm drag techniques as well as double and single leg takedowns and slams too. these are usually then fallowed up by str8 ju jitsu limb destructions and chokes. very effective.

Yeah wrestling in general is good, gets you used to groundwork, controlling your weight and other guys weight, balance, momentum, takedowns, the list goes on. In a fight you will have to adjust your grappling to more a combat based system, like BJJ for example, but freestyle will get you the comfort on the ground that most BJJ people don't ever start out with.

i would say wrestling is one of the best bases you can have. look at mark kerr & coleman, genki sudo, kazushi sakuraba...

          its free
it will allow you to gain great position for striking on the ground
you get weird looking ears which make you look tough
it is the best conditioning sport at most if not all high schools/colleges
          greatly improves mental toughness

in all seriousness i think it is fantastic for fighting. i am a weightlifter more than a fighter, and usually get owned by (good or college level) wrestlers whether it be the clinch or ground.

for example...i weighed the same as this guy, (wrestler), but could out bench press him by about 75 pounds. i am sure i was stronger than him at everything else as well but we only talked about bench press... so we start going at it, and he starts misdirecting me with ease, taking shots from nowhere, ect.

one thing people dont take into consideration when addressing strength is true, or actual strength. also known as brute strength. wrestling will greatly increase your grip/tendon/ligiment strength which will allow you to overpower someone like....ME...who would absolutely outclass you in the gym.

to conclude, huge biceps and a six pack dont mean shit when you fight a guy with a big neck and mutant ears.

f you take wrestling seriously you can get alot out. The best virtue of a good wreslter is the mental toughness.
