  • which style of mma best for street?

    hi all

here's a question for you. After watching MMA for years now we can see three main types of fighters. Let's call them...

Sprawl & Brawl: eg. Chuck Liddell. These guys want to work on their feet and are usually good strikers with hands, feet, knees etc. When they go to ground they look to get back up rather than submit.

Ground & Pound: eg. Coleman, Kerr. they look to use a strong takedown and attain a top position so they can launch strikes continuously.

Submission Guys: eg. Carlos Newton. These guys are looking to go to ground ASAP & then to take time to work a submission.

OKAY, so these are the three main types, of course all MMA guys now days are multiskilled but do usually tend to be specialise in one of the three main groups. So the question is, which 'style' is most applicable to the street. Obviously your training dictates how you will fight so if you are focused on one certain area that's where you'll be most comfortable. But which is most street oriented.

For the record I think that the Sprawl & Brawl comes first, then G&P and lastly submission.

    What do you think??

u wouldnt wanna ground and pound anyone on the street, or even try to take them down. u wanna stay on your feet, be alert, and be ready to escape. the last thing u wanna do is attempt a double leg takedown and get that close and involved with your attacker. if some crackhead on the street attacks u, u dont wanna get anywere close to him. he could have weapons, needles, buddies....u never know. same with any attacker on the street. u dont know wtf they want, or what they are carrying on themn. on the street your only concern should be to escape. the last thing u wanna do is get that close to somene on the street if u dont have to.

btw, im talking about real self defense. im not talking about hanging out at bars and getting into fights to prove your tough or impress chicks. that isnt self defense at all. mma matches dont reflect confrontations and attacks on the street in anyway whatsoever.

Ok I'm sick of these street fight threads. Mainly because people hold 'street fighters' in a such a high regard. The term street fight is so vague it's annoying. Street fighting could be you vs a Gang, u vs Bob from around the corner, u vs a crackhead. The possibility's are endless.. So your question is very vague. Since Emptyness's imagines a street fight as a gang of people or one person who has friends around the corner or a angry gun packing crackhead I'll imagine the street fight as a pissed off dude at the beach in his bathers. It all depends on the situation and the circumstances. What MA training in my situation? It's easy to manipulate things. It's like me saying witch MA training who you choose in this situation: A man is running at you with a knife. You can choose; A. Karate B. Boxing or C. Some Knife defence MA? Anyways I'm starting to raddle a bit. So your on the beach and some pissed of guy in bathers comes out of the ocean and starts a fight with you because you 'stole' his wave. Witch MA would you prefer to have? I would choose grapperling any day of the week. Why? #1 Because I know he doesn't have weapon, unless he carries a knife around in his bathers, witch wouldn't be the smartest idea in the world. 2. The ground is soft. 3. If you fight someone standing up they have A LOT more options, I can't stress that enough. Hell for all I know if we go toe to toe he could do a cart wheel on top my head and whoop my ass he could just start doing crazy stuff, the point is it's a lot harder for me to predict what he is going to do. If I get him on the ground I limit is options. I won't see any fly kicks or lucky punch's or anything when he's on the ground, he's isolated and controlled. That’s my 2 cents.

i recognise the point your trying to make dude but i think you missed the point of the question. we're not really talking style vs style as in boxing vs karate but rather about range or strategy most applicable to street. i train BJJ so trust me i'm not knocking grappling at all. i'm simply stating which mode, Sprawl & Brawl, Ground & pound or Submission would be most appropriate for street. i want to see if people emphasise certain areas in their training depending if they're training for sport or street. the delivery system will still be the same but how much time you devote to each will determine how you perform. in other words 'fight as you train, train as you fight'.

obviously like you said it depends on the situation but in most cases a street encounter will involve more than two people and a high likely of some weapons especially in a burglary/robbery type scenario.

as for your beach scenario, well if your positive the dude is alone and unarmed then go to ground for sure but you are limiting your escape if someone else decides to join.
