  • Feeling down...

Im new to bjj, been training about 6 months now...i train 5 days a week. but today i rolled with this guy, who has been training for a year or two and took about 7 months off and today was his third class back....so he tapped me out twice...and the second time he choked me while i had him in my gaurd. so yeah im feeling pretty crappy right now...considering hes been off for so long and he owned me. there is a weight difference and age difference, but im pretty sure that shouldnt matter... and i have my first tournmanent comming up, so hopefully i can work on somethings...thank you for reading

I've been training about 6 months, and someone who has been training for about 1 choked me out from my guard. He had 70 pounds on me. Did it suck? Yeah.

But I learned from it and next time I won't let it happen.

Everytime you lose or make a mistake is an opportunity to learn and get better. Sometimes people get lucky. I've tapped people bigger, stronger, and more experienced than me. I've been tapped countless times by just about everyone. Each time has taught me something new about the game.

Don't get discouraged. Just because he's been out of the game for awhile doesn't mean he forgot everything he learned, rusty or not. Just because you practice 5 times a week doesn't mean you'll be able to beat everyone you think you should be able to beat. There's always going to be someone out there to surprise you.

Keep practicing and don't give up. Try to look at a loss as a new challenge to be overcome.

Who cares? Always remember you guys are on the same team, what he shows you to be your weakness in the studio is so you wont tap to that in the tournement, or in a real fight. My instructor gets owned by his master, he says when he rolls with his master that he feels like he knows absoluetly nothing, and hes a black belt. I take chances trying new moves or set ups all the time and lesser guys catch me when I miss or make a mistake. ITs all practice!!!

This isn't a reason to feel down, it's a reason to train harder. Figure out why he was able to beat you and then concentrate on what you need to do better.

You do not learn from the rolls that you dominate. You learn from the ones where you lose....

So stop feeling sorry for yourself and start learning what you can do to beat this guy.

hehe pretty much everyone has fallen victim to the dreaded embarassment of being choked out from the person in your guard. Hell, I was even omoplata'ed once!

It's better to happen in training where you learn from it, rather than in front of 200 people (as others have said).

I'm sure you know now that if he is choking you from inside your guard you need to make space in between you two so he cannot complete the choke. You can doing this by opening the guard and placing your feet on his hips and pushing him away. Of course your guard is now open, but there's many things you can do from there in terms of sweeps with your feet on his hips.

Don't feel down. Just remember "It's always a good day at Jiu Jitsu." You might not be having it, but at least half of all participants are. 50/50 is pretty good odds if you ask me...

Ahaha, oh yeah, the Ezekiel... everyone gets tapped by those at least once... good thing theyr'e not too hard to defend against once you see them coming.
