  • new training partner

Well I trained with my kung fu friend again, and we went a bit harder, and he is now completely interested in BJJ and judo!
He wants to learn as much as he can, and we'll be training at least once or twice a week with rolling, technical things, etc.
Great to have a training partner again.
He was a bit homophobic about the closeness of grappling, and tried to tell me that he would dodge out of the way of a clinch, but we sparred it twice, and he was taken down each time, so finally he shook his head and said, "I gotta learn this stuff."
So I finally have a training buddy again, and I don't have to spend any money to roll on a regular basis now
He is a fast learner, and got the mount escape down on the first try. So I'm looking forward to some good training.

Maybe I'm not the odd man out with traditional stylists after all. (oh yes, I showed him the UFC 2 with Royce dominating kung fu, karate, etc) He just stared wide eyed.

    Take care,
    Ryu

So, you have a training partner now - how, and with who did you train with prior to this new training partner?

    Ronnie.

I was a part of Carlos Machado's BJJ Academy for about a year, and rolled on a regular basis. Prior to that I had two BJJ buddies in Washington state who I trained with everday, and we would usually gather at seminars whether they be Rickson, Fabio Santos, etc.
I trained also with Paul Vunak for a little bit, but my most intense grappling was definately with Carlos.

After that I kind of took it a bit easy, but always found time to practice newaza here and there
I just have more time now.

      Take care,
      Ryu

Hey Ryu. How was the Academy? Are you still going to be taking classes there?

          Chad,
I'm not there anymore. The school was absolutely great, and I learned a lot. The fighters there are very solid, and it's very intense. Unfortunately I am also a starving college student. The school took out around 80-100 dollars from me every month, and I couldn't afford it anymore, so I pulled out to just focus on school.
The next school I get into though will probably be the Kodokan.

          Take care,
          Ryu

haha a lot of uses of the word "school"

The Machado academy cost about 100 dollars a month, and I stopped to focus on college
next "dojo" I go to will be the Kodokan.

I'm sure everyone could figure out what I was trying to say though

Cool, just be good to the guys that agree to spar with you, a good sparring partner is hard to come across sometimes.

              Take Care and Good Luck,

How do you like his Gung fu techniques? You said that he did a lot of fast kicking so I assume he is a northern shaolin practitioner. Are you gonna try to learn anything from him? Dude, I'm glad you have a body to roll with now and it's damn nice of you to be teaching him...but don't you think you should find someone who actually knows grappling well enough to give you good resistance on the ground? This guy doesn't sound like much more than a tackling dummy.

                    Ryu,
Did you train with Carlos when his classes were in Plano?

I trained with him as well but also had to quit due to the prices.

                      Badger,
The time I spent training with Carlos was at his Dallas school. I agree it is pretty expensive But worth it in my opinion.

Maxximus, his technique is very fast, and very powerful. Yeah he is a northern shaolin stylist. He also has some Chin na training that hurts a lot. When he was showing me some standing locks, I could feel the pain deep into my bones it felt like. Ouch.
But as far as the ground...he has little skill. I do need some better resistence, but in a couple years I think I'll be at the Kodokan anyway, so I'm not worried about it right now. I'm just glad to have a buddy to train with again. Occasionally I bring over a friend who weighs in at about 350 pounds, and we grapple as well. I rolled with a lot of BJJ guys during my time with Carlos Machado, and that wasn't that long ago, so I feel still in shape I guess. Mostly now it's weights, dummies, and sparring partners. I need to get my degree and make it to Japan before I get way too rusty.

                      Take care,
                      Ryu

I agree training with Carlos is worth the price-but my 3-year old son is worth it even more
So I do alot of training at home.

                        You live in Dallas?
If so you want to train together sometime?

I'm currently about 30 or so minutes outside of Dallas, but possibly.
I'll see what comes up. LOL, I'm rusty though, and may not be the most challenging individual to work with.

I'm a bit wary of people on the internet (that's not an insult at all, I'm sure you are a good guy, but it's just that I have had some weird experiences. ) Hope you understand. But we might be able to train for a bit one day. Though it might be difficult with college life starting back up again. I'll keep you posted.
                          Thanks for the offer.

It's Cool-I am wary of people on the internet as well.
You do sound like a honorable guy from your posts though.
                            Just keep me posted.

IF you do want to train sometime maybe we can meet at a mutual place(Japanese food, maybe)to talk about training & make sure neither one of us is Psycho

BTW,500 pushups a night does not sound too rusty to me!
