I'll try once more to find a pic of the technique I spoke about, but I think everyone might get a bit pissed that I'm taking up so much space with these things
Yep,thats it.That shoulder lock can be taken if he is on your back facing the same way also.
In that very first pic the guy on the bottom just grabs that hand that is inside reaching for the collar and sucks it in to his chest. The last couple of pics show the rest.
The other tech Ryu showed you was to escape the bottom and gain side control. That is a very good book he is getting those pics from.I would get a copy. Also, they are taking stills and trying to show you the technique in those pics. You may want to tighten it up some when you practice this.
I asked on an email if you had the student handbook from Jiu Jitsu .net.I f you don't.Email me your address and I will send you my copy.I bought one and looked at it all ready.
There are quite a few techniques to apply to the person on all fours. This position happens alot in BJJ so they have developed many approaches, I think. I have forgotten several of the methods, but here are a few that I like:
I usually put one knee underneath their body - b/t their knee and arm. You might have to work this in. And then place most of my weight on top of their upper back and shoulders, so they cant move much. Smash them down so they cant escape and cause you trouble!!!!! If they are really cranking hard, try grabbing the far ankle and pulling up on it - it'll make it hard for them to escape, but also keeping weight on their shoulders and neck!
From here one of the common attacks in the relogio or clock choke. This works really well if they let you get the grip in their collar! See the Wallid choke on Royce tape - its a text book example of the relogio. If they arent giving up the far collar grip, then you can keep on reaching for their far upper arm with one or both hands and use this to drive them over, as someone already mentioned.
If you cant get the clock choke or the far arm, their is a nasty choke that comes down over the far side of their neck, unlike the clock grip. If you have your right knee under them, then take your right hand over the far side of their neck and reach deep into their collar, gripping the collar that is nearest your body with your thumb inside. Its helpful to use your left hand to initially grip this collar and feed it into the right hand. Dont get this grip too tight - you need some room to twist it in the next step.
Then grab the other (further) collar with your left hand. Note that you want to keep your weight over their neck and shoulders the entire time! Now your will twist your right grip, turning your right thumb clockwise and driving the knifehand of your right hand into their throat (for the choke). Also forcefully extend the left hand on the collar directly away from you - this will keep then from rolling away. And finally have your legs to into a full sprawl - while still concentrating all of your weight onto the grips.
This works real quick - if not, you arent getting the grips right.
I tried that trick you mentioned on spreading the turtle by grabbing a ankle and pulling to work the hooks in and it worked pretty good last night. I also tried Sweep's trick of pulling on the belt, it didn't work as well, but I think that was simply because my school doesn't train with Gi's so I couldn't get a good hold on his boardshorts, oh well. Just wanted to say thanks for the tip.-ED
Good Ed,glad that worked for you.I dont know if you saw it,but I posted some pics on a thread and one was Rick brealing down the turtle. With the underhook the way he has it in that pic he just rolls him back toward himself and lays down into sidemount.Or you can single out that arm and roll over and take an armbar.Once you get a hook in.I like to do one of these rather than reach in.I think Sak has shown you all why.If a guy reaches in and you trap that arm,it's kimura time.
