I take BJJ but Id also like to cross train in a striking or standing up art, just in case im unable to take the fight to the ground or there are more than 1 opponent...what would be a good art that wouldnt take too long to master (like kung fu or something) but still pretty cheap?

Thai boxing and western boxing are the quickest to learn and the most effective. Don't know about cheapest though. Plus you can get alot out of training by yourself with these two, unlike karate or kung fu where you have to master many a form before you learn the the good stuff i.e. effective stuff.
hope that helps

Thai boxing is a great start, but don't think that BJJ and Muay Thai are "where it's at". They are both good, but they are both segments of totality; thus, they won't have all the answers. You'll get great conditioning and learn to apply Thai boxing relatively quickly, but continue to investigate other useful things (ie: shooto, jun fan, savate, kali, and karate if you can find a realistic instructor, etc.) Take what works for you and put the rest on a shelf just in case you need it later.

Muay Thai,Boxing,Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu, I think these are the best styles to train in because...
Muay Thai is the science of 8 limbs teaches you to use your Feet,Hands,Elbows and Knees is a fight is also teaches you to use the clinch to your advantage. Some people call it the most powerful and lethal martial art.
Boxing is a pure striking art that only uses you hands, and Boxing is being underrated as a fighting style that can truly help you in a danger's situation, Its punches are the best in the world. Not to mention its great foot work.
Combine Muay Thai and Boxing, you will be an amazing striker.
Judo, a down sized version of jujitsu, but concentrates on throws more that jujitsu, it teaches you how to dominate your opponent and teaches you submission moves and locks, it is said to be a very fast and energetic martial art.
Brazilian Jujitsu is a martial art that mostly ground work, it teaches you how to throw down you opponent and use submission moves and locks to weaken and hurt your opponent but be warned this is purely a ground fighting martial art, that means you will have to put your opponent on the ground.
Combine Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu and you will be an amazing grappler and ground fighter
and.....if you combine all four arts you will be, overall an Amazing Fighter.

Having live training in all four arts will make you a well rounded fighter. The attributes of boxing and muaythai will teach you to be somewhat cool under fight pressure; judo and jiujitsu will teach you how to finish a fight in a more subtle but deadly way.
They will make you hella formidable against your average untrained fighter and somewhat formidable against other trained fighters, but how about trained fighters who are heavier and stronger?
I think mindset and heart are equally (if not more) important than the arts itself - with yellow bamboo being the only exception.

What about someone with a weapon eg a knife?
What about a sucker punch?
What about when you're injured?
What about when you're holding your baby and trying to open your car door?
What about when you're tired after being awake for 24 hours?
How long have you been training for mate? MA's might teach you to have more confidence but it should also teach you your limitations.

You know, I'm not convinced. Empty handed MAs are not really a practical and modern "self-defense". Allow me to elaborate.
I think professional wrestling might be a better medium to train in for a truly effective "street self-defense". You'll be an expert "trash talker" and you can dick wave all night long like a true meat head, and if push ever comes to shove your chair and/or bottle picking up reflexes will be honed to a razors edge. Just like the one you keep in your pocket, to poke yourself in the forehead with before the cops show up, so you can make a big cry baby sceen and claim self defense, getting the other people thrown in jail....who just finally got tired of you talking shit and tried to use their (fill in appropriate martial art here) against you.
