  • people who clam up

One of my friends is also one of the people I grapple wiht most. He is bigger and stronger than me, but not bulky. He is not very gracefull and when get to a position like sidemount and try to control his arms, he clams up and makes little jerky movements and it sucks because I really can't do anything about it. What advise can you give about getting his arm in my control, or just advise vs. clammers in general.

    thanks.

does he turn to his side or turtle up when he clams up?

If he has his arms clammed up by his chest and you're going for sidemount then he has posture on you. Not good posture, but you're going to have a very hard time getting chest-to-chest with him. Try switching to north-south or just go for the mount.

Well if he does that (as my friends do also when i have them in mount), It think that you should start "striking" their face, to show that they would not last long if they did that in a fight. Then they will probably cover their face, and when they do that you go for an armbar after one of your strikes.
But as someone said, you need to go to mount first to do this.

You should try to soften him up a bit in side mount with your elbows in his ribs.....solar plexus...face w.e is open and if that dont work then try moving up to the mount and attack his neck or work a wristlock from the top to open one arm up and transition to a straight armbar or w.e is open.

thanks JkD, and how have you been these days?

PS to everyone: I don't know any moves from north-south, but I would like to, what moves would you recomend?

                There's a couple there.

I can't give a great number of details, but if you are able to control their arms from north south (pin their biceps to the ground) you can also just jump forward and reverse mount them. Make sure to keep your feet are far enough forward so they can't grab them and flip you off. Then you can play around, use your weight to make them uncomfortable while going for one of their feet and taking it to a knee bar.

With gi there are lots of chokes you can do if you think about it. no-gi, not so much.

I've seen those few, but theyarent any more effective on the clammer.
