You know, I have never had the misfortune of getting my ass kicked in a street fight *knock on wood* mainly because I'm a decent guy just out to have a good time, I would rather talk to girls than get all bent out of shape because some goon shoulders me in a bar. What I've noticed is that 99% of the time these guys aren't looking to fight guys like me, they want to fight someone who wants to fight. I've had many a guy bump into me trying to start something and when he sees absolutely no malice in my reaction they say "sorry dude" and go off and bother someone else. The thing that has saved my ass most is keeping my senses and wits about me so that I can see trouble coming from a mile away.

I guess what I'm saying is that too much emphasis and discussion is based around "street fighting" and which martial art can kick ass best in a self defense situation. In reality anyone who studies any martial art is going to have a huge advantage over the average thug who wants to fight. It will be fitness, training and intelligence Vs. booze fueled bravado.

I have great respect for all martial arts and for anyone who has the discipline to master them. I don't believe one is superior to another and I think some people waste far too much time using gang mentality to defend their style.

My suggestion if you want to be able to defend yourself in the unfortuneate situation you should get into a fight. If you live near Torrance CA USA go to the Gracie Academy. One intro class and you will see how easy it is to defend yourself against an average thug finishing the fight quickly whilst minimising risk to yourself. If you don't live near, go to www.gracieacademy.com and buy their Gracie Jiu Jitsu Basics Video. If yo are not sure if this stuff is going to work. Buy the Gracie In Action DVD's first then be convinced.

      Happy Training

Just had a look at the web site. From a BJJ point of view looks great! This guy is one of the best and Carlson Gracie is as well. As I understand from Carlson Gracie clubs and looking at the class description, it is possible that it could be sportive orianteted. But I wouldn't let that stop you, it will be all good stuff and you will learn lots about - Dislocate joints, break knees, throw dudes on their heads!

          Go for it bro!

So you're a pussy who can't fight, doesn't like to fight, and isn't really interested in learning how to fight.

                  Great.

I'd cross train boxing, brazilian jiu jitsu and maybe judo/wrestling for take downs.

any decent bjj club will teach u tons of takedowns and throws from both wrestling and judo. u only really need to train at a good bjj school, and u will get to learn wrestling takedowns and judo throws without all the restrictions of both sports.

and mt is way better for self defense than just boxing, it gives u way more options.

But to be realistic, you are not going to learn either of those anywhere near the level that you would at a Judo or Wrestling club, right?

Because you are hiding under the table knocking on wood whenever trouble arises.

no, but u will learn a good ammount, especially at the higher level and if u want to compete. jiu jitsu competitions start standing up.
