  • Judo/BJJ potato/potAto

How many of you believe that BJJ is substantially different from Judo? I am curious because it seems to me that if you focus on ne-waza almost exclusively, any judoka can be as effective on the ground as a BJJ practicioner.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to knock BJJ (I train it myself) but I have done Judo too and even now I reference my "Judo in Action" books for chokes and pins and my grappling has improved.

Other than focus on a particular facet, it doesn't seem to me like there is any difference between the two arts.

The focus of Judo is the perfection of one's character. The focus of BJJ is not, although character improvement can certainly be an ancilliary benefit.

Saying that BJJ and Judo are the same is like saying NASCAR and NHRA drag racing are the same thing. They both use cars to race, but they are very, very different animals.

Well thats a good point although I wasn't really even thinking about the mental/spiritual aspects of either one. Just the technical.

Technically speaking, yes they are very similar, just as Taekwondo and Shotokan have all the same techniques, but are not the same martial arts.

In most TKD the focus is on tournament play with emphasis on kicking techniques. In Shotokan the emphasis is on self-defense via kata emphasising powerful punching. Yet they are still pretty much the same technically speaking.

Judo people want to claim that BJJ people are "just doing Judo newaza". That would be like Shotokan people claiming that TKD people are "just doing Shotokan kicking".

Judo people are jealous of BJJ market success. That's why they make these assertions. I give credit where credit is due, but it all pretty much boils down to "So what?"

BJJ comes from Judo, but BJJ is not Judo and Judo is not BJJ.

There's my opinion. That and $3 might get you a latte.

            I admit to stealing Andre's Karate/TKD analogy.

I'm not for sure, but I don't think that Judo plays the guard as much or uses guard sweeps. I think that is the main difference, the cultivation of the guard and mount. I also believe that the positioning strategy is different.

there are guard sweeps in judo
But they do not focus on the guard as much, because in judo you can get pinned or stood up. The rule is to get out of guard as soon as you can.

I liked the shotokan/TKD comparison. That actually was very good.

Judo Dude and others that have extensive backgrounds in Judo can elaborate much better, but I believe that the rules in Judo tournaments are much different than in BJJ tournaments.

Sure, there are overlaps, but I believe that if you compare Japanese Jiu Jitsu with Judo, they might be similar, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a bit more different, rather than similar.

First of all, Bjj is not like the olimpic judo it is kosen judo.
Olimpic judo is a weak form of old judo, ask joe moreira(sp) who went to japen 20 years ago to learn judo, he could not see the difference between judo and bjj.

Why do have the ropeless white&blue belts a problem whit judo While the bjj brown and blackbelts train in judo,
                    Bolo trains in judo
                    joe moreira traind in judo
renzo and royler traind in judo

Please watch a kosen judo tape first, before you make a shit comment

If Judo is pretty much the same thing as BJJ, then why didn't it mop up in NHB before BJJ came along? I know why, because BJJ has a much more advanced ground game. Judo is an awesome martial art and should be practiced by anybody who's serious about competing, but it's different enough form BJJ to be weaker than it. As I've stated before, Jiu-Jitsu could screw Judo up.

Judo guys are always talking about how BJJ guys are arrogant and disrespect Judo.

I never see this. All the BJJ guys I know give Judo much respect and several crosstrain in it.

Where is all this disrespect for Judo that you guys are talking about? I just don't see it.

Go to a BJJ school and tell them your background is Judo and they'll say "Cool! You're ahead of the game! Would you work some throws with me after class?" .

Go to a Judo school and say your background is BJJ and you'll get a very cold reception and probably a long lecture about how Judo is superior and BJJ people are a bunch of disrespecting loud-mouth brutes.

Actually, there are a few guys who wear jiujitsu Gi's in my Judo dojo and everyone treats them fine.
