well for the average fighter palm stikes are less likely to injure your wrist and hand, closed fist striking can injure many parts of the hand if hitting hard bone r missjudging a stike and bending the wrist,

but for me personally i do use close fist strikes sometimes in fights, i use any strike wich is needed for the situation, but i guess with my conditioning i am less likely to damage my hands while punching people than a normal boxer in a street fight, peoples faces/heads feel soft to my knuckles usually, correct striking form with consistant conditioning will stop most minor injuries while striking,

but palm strikes are very effective and it seems people dont give them enough cedit, they are safer to use than close fist punching without gloves thats for sure,

    peace.

I think palm strikes to the head are much safer. I actually broke my hand punching someone (who moved) in the cheekbone. And that was with gloves on!

If you doubt the effectiveness of palm strikes watch some of Bas Rutten's fights. He always palm strikes the head.

A fist is equally effective with slightly better reach but is much more easily broken.

HE palm strikes the head because that is the rule in pancrease. He was competing in pancrease so thats what he did. But yeah, he still got a LOT of force and speed into those strikes and palms definitely have knocked plenty of people out.
