My judo places spends the same amount of time in both standing and newaza. Is this normal for judo? From what I've heard on this board, it seems like most judo places do mostly standing and little newaza.

As a general rule, most judo clubs are going to emphasize tachiwaza over newaza. Tachiwaza is more important for tournament success. One can become a judo champion with lousy newaza, but nobody can become a champion with lousy tachiwaza.
Which leads me to another point. You will find that the level of judo instruction varies greatly in the United States. There is no basic curriculum that any judo instructor has to follow, nor are there any tests that any of the organizations have for becoming an instructor. It has been my experience that the overall quality of instruction in BJJ is much higher than in judo. You will find very few judo instructors that make their living off of judo here, while most BJJ black belts dedicate their lives to teaching. While there are many other factors that enter the equation for why the overall quality of instruction in BJJ is better, for the sake of brevity I don't see a reason to go into them.
So, in conclusion you will find as you travel from judo dojo to judo dojo, a larger variance in how judoka train than in BJJ. So while your school might have a more balanced approach, it is the exception and not the rule. -

I always thought that the people who dedicate their lives to teaching an art are doing it only for the money. For example, my old Tae Kwon Do place.
On the other hand, I get the impression that people don't teach an art as their main job are doing it because they like to teach.Comment

Judo dude, you are right on.
At Sawtelle Judo, the black belts all have day jobs and just train and instruct at night time, whereas many of the the BJJ instructors all try to teach full time and make a living at teaching.
But I know that John Ouano has a day job, teaches and of course sells Gi's.Comment
