every time someone tries to put you in sidecontrol, bring your knee on the side closest to your opponent up to your chest and get it underneath him. if you can get your knee underneath your opponent you can use it to escape side control. once i discovered this, people havent been able to fully control me when im on my back and it makes escaping bad positions like 10x easier. try to keep proper hand position by the head as well so they dont gain head control.

      hello,

now for the part of the puzzle you have been missing. most make the mistake of bringing the feet up to the butt and push "up and out". this is wrong. it creates all the force gigantor is sensing in order to follow you.

when you bring your feet up, place both of them out to the side of your own hips. instead of trying to push your butt/hips "up and out", pull your hips in the direction of your feet and then extend your legs for the push.

the first method: feet right next to the butt actually uses a great deal of force moving gigantors body at the same time you move yours.

the second method: feet planted out to the side of your butt/hips will move you and not gigantor.

this is exactly what you want.

back to your frame. it only exists to keep gigantor from following you. it does not exist to push gigantor off you.

bring your feet up to your butt and out to your "far side" about 12 inches. pull your butt/hips toward your feet and then extend your legs to complete your hip out (in one smooth motion). keep your frame stationary, do not push gigantor. just keep him from following.

now... getting your legs into guard position should be easier now. the main reason is you have created the same amount of space as the first method might, but you have two new factors in your favor. one, by not directing any energy into gigantor, gigantor will have less to direct against you. two, you have changed the angle that you will move your legs and hips under gigantor.

      what?!?!?!?!?!

by moving your feet a "foot" to the side and then hipping out, you have significantly changed the distance between your hips and those of gigantor. you will have a far larger gap into which you will slide your leg to achieve guard.

      more to follow

        hello,

even if gigantor keeps a tight hold on your upper body, and even if he also blocks your knee as you bring it across his hip you still have a really good option.

BAM!! oh no, gigantor stopped my knee, what to do? what to do?

use your far side foot to hook his hip (like butterfly guard). now you can "lift gigantor" and slide your knee across to guard.

if using the hook method, just remember to keep knee bent some and point the knee outward. this will prevent gigantor from stepping over to mount.

and when some have brought thier knee across, they might hit one last snag.

gigantor lets go of your head, plants his hand on your knee, and confounds your guard attempt (half guard is your best hope now).

not you. you wont have this problem. as soon as you have brought your knee ass far as you can, point that knee to the ceiling. drive it with some force. you can move a 300 pound person like this.

keep driving that knee up up up, if your foot is still a bit stuck in gigantors leg, either use it like a butterfly hook, or just drive the hip/knee a little farther, pulling the foot toward you rear and it should pop right out.

        NOW..... think it through.

        and then train it right?

        NO.

ask your instructor to work you through it. be safe. don't practice some technique you got from a forum until your instructor has proved it safe and approved it as correct.

THEN.... train the hell out of your positional escapes.

        thanks.

          hello,

incidentally folks, left the steps about framing out for two reasons.

one... from the post, it sounded like the problem was the feet.

two... it is a built in incentive to ensure that the instructor MUST be consulted. there is enough here for the instructor to understand the premise and work the details to perfection with THIER student. not ours.

if you offer advice to another instructors student, make sure you involve that other instructor in the process. instructors (reputable ones) find the process very rewarding, just as a decent student does. don't do anything to compromise such a rewarding process. newbies may not always remember, but we should.

          for them.

          thanks.
