You need a mouthpiece (boil in water the first time and imprint with your teeth) for a custom fit. Chest protectors are optional, I never wore one. Forearm pads, instep pads, shin pads, gloves and foot gear. A good cup is needed also.

You should also try posting this down in the fitness and training FORUMN. Or the korean or japanese forumn depending on what style of karate you are taking.

Hi Matt! I love those pictures! Keep posting them, ok? No one here is getting tired of looking at them! The only thing I would like even more is a nice picture of you holding a card with today's date on it!

What sort of contact level are you sparring at? Also what ruleset?

Gumshield, cup, gloves & maybe shinguards that will cover you for most levels. Headguards also good if you're taking a lot of strikes to the head, boxing, kb. tb etc.

I think you need to place yourself in concrete, don't worry about the breath holes, wait over night, then, when you wake up in the morning you will have a nice coating that can take some damage. How does that sound?

                        Basic:
                        Head gear
                        mouth piece
                        Gloves
                        Cup
                        Shinpads

For going harder with knees and elbows add:
                        Belly pad/chest protector
                        Elbow pads

I'm partial to Fairtex gear myself (www.fairtexgear.com), but Twins, Windy, and ThaiSmai are out there too.
